Shri Krishna is a God of love, which can be persuasively evident when he is in the presence of his loving consorts. In this Tanjore painting, his eternal love can be seen engraved in gold. The painting epics Rukmini, an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi who was endlessly devoted to Krishna eternally as well as Satyabhama, an incarnation of Bhudevi, the earth-goddess who was his other consort, who aided Krishna in defeating the demon Narakasura.
The two women had the sweetest connection with Lord Krishna, as evident in the way they graspingly embrace him in this painting. All three are dressed in the finest resplendent clothes, their jewelry only adding on the golden shine of their outfits. Rukmini’s and Satyabhama’s sarees are laden with pearls, giving them another layer of detail and loving care. The peacock feather on his head and the flowing garland around lord Krishna only add to his divine aura. With saccharine smiles on their faces, the three of them look forward, as if completely content with where each of them is. Heavy, draped curtains lie on the top left, enhancing the space. The Tanjore style of painting has truly managed to capture the love and the sense of romance shared among them beautifully.
