Julius Jolly

Julius Jolly performed a thorough study of the Dharmashastra, a body of ancient Hindu legal literature, as well as other old Indian legal works.

The translation and commentary that Jolly completed on the Manusmriti, often known as the Laws of Manu, is his most well-known contribution. An essential addition to the study of Hindu law is his translation, "The Institutes of Vishnu," released in 1880.

Jolly also taught Indian law and Sanskrit at the University of Würzburg in Germany. His knowledge of Indian legal traditions and his aptitude for bridging the gap between legal studies and Indology earned him significant praise.
