Book Description
Foreword

This book contains the results of the researches of seventeen scholars who have studied Ayurveda. These interesting studies make it amply evident that, though Ayurveda is very ancient, it can even now be effectively used for the cure of many serious diseases. Ayurveda is perhaps that singular system of medicine which derives inspiration from Philosophical idealism. Yet it has an abiding relation with the material human body right from its embryonic stage to old age. The Vaidya or Kaviraja (in Bengal) is supposed to be a great scholar of the Sanskrit language, a poet, and an extra-ordinary man who can diagnose a disease just but feeling the pulse of a sick man. I hope that this collection of Ayurvedic essays would be appreciated by the specialists and general readers.

Editor's Notes

The present monograph on Ayurvedic studies includes a few seminar papers read out in the National Seminar on Ayurveda during the last two years in the Asiatic Society, Kolkata. It was decided earlier that the scientific papers read out in the seminars by scholars might be published in the Journal of the Asiatic Society, Kolkata, from time to time. But this year, when again another Ayurvedic seminar is being held, it was decided to print only a few papers, fully or partially, in a booklet form to have a glimpse of the Ayurvedic thoughts and ideals of modern Ayurvedic scholars, Therefore in this small booklet a few articles only have been accommodated without any technical datas or diagrams etc., for quick publication. The rest may be published in full-fledged form in the Journal of the Asiatic society.

I express my sincere thanks to the President, General Secretary and the members of the Council, publication committee for their kind approval. I express my thanks to Prof. Satya Ranjan Banerjee and Kaviraj Abichal Chattopadhyaya for helping me in selection and election of the articles and in other academic affairs. I thank also the Arunima Printing Works for their sincere effort to give a quick delivery of this booklet.
