Gayatri Devi Vasudev is the Editor of Modern Astrology, the world’s foremost and most authentic journal on Jyotisha or Hindu astrology with an international readership and the successor to her father Dr. B. V. Raman’s The Astrological Magazine. She was actively involved for nearly 27 years with Dr. Raman until his death in 1998 in his mission to bring astrology into the comity of sciences. She continues his mission. She is also the National Vice President of the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences founded by Dr. Raman to organize the study and practice of astrology. She was conferred the Queen of Astrology title in 2003 by the then Sri Lankan President Mrs. Chandrika Kumaratunge.
Gayatri Devi Vasudev has authored many books on astrology that include The Art of Matching Charts, How to Judge a Horoscope- Volume II, Advanced Principles of Prediction, Clues to Interpreting Charts and Practical Horary Astrology. She has brought out a collection of papers Astrology and the Hoax of Scientific Temper and edited Raman’s New Millennium 50 years Ephemeris for (2001- 2050) and Astrology. Vastu and Architecture.
India has always been an astrological society but at some point of time in the early part of the 20th century, the educated began to develop a certain distaste for this ancient science, largely because of the educational system in the country which distanced itself from the traditional branches of learning under a mistaken notion that by doing so, it was proving its rational credentials. However, astrology being as good a science as any other of the modem ones, has stood the test of time and in recent years has made a resurgent reappearance as a result of my revered father, Father of Modern Astrology, the late Dr. B. V. Raman’s relentless efforts to propogate it as an academic subject. Astrology has now captured the interest of large segments of the educated public. The wave of resurgence has swept away this pseudo-rationalist resistance bringing with it the realization of the invaluable role astrology can play in helping cope with the ills of modern society. There has been some kind of snowballing effect in educated circles, both in our own country as well as in the west, primarily the United States of America, in their eagerness to retrieve, revive and restore Jyotisha to its pristine glory.
The ancient classical works on the subject are now being eagerly lapped up but the problem begins because of the times when the astrological rules were first formulated being so different from our own. My effort in these pages has been to adapt and apply these rules in the form of dicta, Yogas and combinations to contemporary life in the process seeking to bridge the gap between the ancient rules and their implicational value to the present. This effort is largely the result of the long and invaluable training I received under Dr. Raman from about May 1972 after my law studies to December 1998 when I was working with him in his mission of astrology. The insights I gained in the application of astrological rules to practical cases as I watched Dr. Raman at work and in my discussions with him as one eager to take in his wisdom have all found their way into my editorials in MODERN ASTROLOGY and earlier in the now defunct THE ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE. I have put together some of these editorials, revised at some places, in this volume. I an1 sure my readers will give this volume the same warm reception that they have given my earlier books on astrology.
I must express my gratefulness to Mr. J. P. Jam of Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd. in bringing out the volume and his continuing support to me in my mission of astrology.
