Book Description
Preface

The Vedic astrology is intimately personal and intensely practical. It reflects the understanding and perception of ancient seers regarding various facets of life. The seers did not enquire merely out of intellectual curiosity. They wanted to understand the laws of nature and enlighten the path of others. It reveals the vast store of latent faculties inherent in every individual. It also indicates the basic impulses motivating one’s various activities and relationships. It enables a native to know the blueprint about his future and warns him about various impediments in his path of life. The planetary periods or dashas indicate the timing, when different events unfold themselves according to the nature & positioning of planets. Depending upon the their dasha sequence, different planets exert their special impact and direct the course of one’s life. This sequence of dasha and transit of planets at a particular time is the unique feature of Vedic astrology. The astrology has a distinct role to play in providing peace, stability and confidence in every day human life.

The natal chart or horoscope is basically a map of zodiac giving relative positions of planets in different signs & Nakshtras at the time & place of birth of a native. The nature of planetary Combinations or Yogas, and the nature & strength of planets constituting the Yogas affect the individual in very mysterious manner the different houses in the natal chart and the planetary positions therein, influence a native in almost all facets/ relationships of life. The timing of human events is so arranged that the native succeed in attaining a balance, a kind of equilibrium with the cosmic Karmic life forces. Every native enjoys a life of mixed happiness. The happiness & sorrows, opportunities & failures, rewards & deprivations, loss & gains in life are meant to develop our latent faculties. While one is assigned that portion of one’s accumulated’ Karma, which one is expected to workout during present life, one develops skill & talents required in discharging the Karmic responsibilities. The maturity of soul, the insight into life’s mysteries that one brings to tackle life’s tasks is reflected by the strength of the planets in the chant. The opportunities and impediments in life are shown by distribution of benefics & malefics in different Bhavas of the chart. One may orient one’s life on the principles of astrological yogas to attain harmony in life and the ultimate goal of the destiny.

For convenience, the Zodiac has been divided into 12 more or less equal parts called houses/ Bhavas. The 12 houses have reference and cover all the material relations of a Jeeva (soul) in its journey from the womb to the grave. In the process, each house or Bhava has a definite goal and a definite purpose to indicate, which include well as well as bad significations in varying degrees. For the purpose of study, these houses have been grouped together into various combinations depending on their common traits. Some of these groupings are:

a) Kendras or Vishnu sthans- 1st, 4th, 7th &10th houses.
b) Panphara/Succedent houses-2nd, 5th, 8th &11th houses.
c) Apoklim/Cadent houses-3rd, 6th, 9th & 12th houses.
d) Trikones/Lakshmi Sthans-1st, 5th & 9th houses.
e) Trika houses-6th, 8th, & 12th houses.
f) Upachaya houses- 3rd, 6th, 10th & 12th houses.
g) Maraka houses- 2nd, 7th & 12th houses.

The author has earlier written books on "Charisma of Trika Houses" and "Charisma of Upachaya Houses’, which have been received well by astrological fraternity. This has inspired me to write on "Charisma of Kendra Houses’ These houses are called Angular or Cardinal houses as well. As lord Vishnu looks after the welfare of the entire universe, the Kendra Houses acting as foundation & pillars of the horoscope, sustains the entire edifice of one’s life. The Kendra houses indicate one’s involvement in everyday life. The tremendous significance of the Kendra houses can be realized from the fact that the great “Panch Mahapurush Yoga" by Mars, Mercury, Jupiter; Venus and Saturn emerges, when these - planets are either exalted or in their own sign while occupying one of the Kendra houses.

As per Vedas & classics, there are four basic goals of human life. They are Dharma, Artha, Kaam & Moksha. Each of these are represented by a Trikone of houses- Dharma Trikone by 1st, 5th, & 9th houses; Artha Trikone by 2nd, 6th & 10th house; Kaam Trikone by 3rd, 7th & 11th houses: and Moksha Trikone by 4th, 8th and 12h houses. The Dharma & Moksha Trikone shows one’s spiritual growth & advancements; whereas Artha & Kaam Trikone shows one’s Improvement, growth& accumulations of material gains. Our classics have never given importance to material gains over spiritual gains. However the present age talks of nothing but the material gains/ advancements. As a balancing act, each of the four Kendras, represent one of the basic goal of human life- 1st house is part of Dharma Trikone, 4th house of Moksha Trikone, 7th house of Kaam Trikone and 10th house of Artha Trikone.

The first house or lagna is the reference point from where the houses are numbered. The lagna represents all the qualities of the incarnating soul and the vital energy & the creative urge of the creative. Unless the seed of a specific quality / event is included in the Initial spark, other planetary indications will not find suitable Opportunities for manifestation. It represents the beginning of all sentient beings, of all thoughts, imagination, inspiration and Aspirations. The fourth house or Sukhasthan indicates one’s happiness through mother property & comforts. One’s responses Lability to learn from the experience of life depends upon one’s responses, comprehension and astral nature, which are intimately connected to the 4th house. The fourth reveals the past Karma one has already generated in the form of the environment into which. One is born and the emotional nature one has inherited.

The 7th house indicates the manner in which one comes into contact with other members of the society and the nature of partnership, whether with a spouse, or a social relation or business partnerships. Thus it represents the nature of one’s attachments and the gross materiality out of which one should rise. The tenth is house of Karma, action or profession and indicates the way one sustains life and work out the destiny. It represents the success in, and the avenues through which past forces may lead the native towards the future. The fruition of these activities are intimately linked to 4th and 7th house. The welfare of one’s physical well-being and constitution depends upon the strength of head & brain (1st house); heart (4th house), intestines (7th house) and knee joints (10th house). Unless these are fit, the body metabolism will be affected. Further in the life of anyone, one’s mother (4th house), spouse (7th house), karma & profession (10th house) are as important as one’s own self (1st house). On the nature &strength of the Kendra houses, one can assess one’s dynamic involvement in the social environment.

In preparation of the present study, many astrological savants have helped me. The author does not claim originality. In fact I have borrowed the ideas, principles and explanations of some of the great astrologers. It is not possible to name all of them. However I do record my appreciation and thanks to Shri Agrawal, GS, Shri Bipin Behari, Shri Ganesh S, Shri Raman BV and my teachers at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan for their general guidance: It is difficult to identify which ideas arose from whom, but the final form has an identity of its own explained with the help of 100 illustrative charts. I have not the least intention to offend any native of the illustrated charts. However; inadvertently if it has been done, I offer my unconditional apology. I realize my personal limitations and I alone am responsible for any shortcoming, which may come to light.

I am thankful to Mr. Narendra Sagar for his suggestions and extra efforts to get it published on Priority. I am thankful to my ever-enthusiastic grand-daughters—Monil & Ishita Singhal for their constant inspiration and help in computer/ internet related works for my astrological pursuits. It is for the astrological fraternity to assess how far I have succeeded in my efforts. I earnestly hope that the august readers will find this work useful. However I will welcome with open heart any suggestion for improvement of the book.

About the Book

The lagna is basically a reference point from where the various houses in a chart are numbered. The lagna is not synonymous with the ascendant although often used interchangeable. A chart should be delineated from a number of reference points, known as ‘Alternate lagnas’ in order to give us additional clues. The strongest among Ascendant, Moon & Sun should be taken as lagna. These houses are clubbed into various groups. The first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses are called Kendra, Vishnu Sthans, angular or cardinal houses, implying that they are the center or core of the chart. As lord Vishnu looks after the welfare of the entire universe, the Kendra Houses acting as foundation & pillars of the horoscope, sustains the entire edifice of one’s life.

Each of the four Kendras, represent one of the basic goal of human life-1st house is part of Dharma Trikone, 4th house of Moksha Trikone, 7th house of Kaam Trikone and 10th house karmas of the native, his means of livelihood, name & fame; 4th house all types of comforts, luxuries, property & education; and 7th spouse, partnership, padprapti, foreign settlement, diplomacy & public relations. The cycle of birth, love & care, death and Karma, which sustain life, are well integrated with the strength & quality of Kendra houses.

The Kendras are the major factor in the combinations called Panch Mahapurush and Chatussagar Yoga, which are of rare individual greatness and bestow a great and unique magnetic influence to follow. They also denote native’s dynamic involvement in social environment around him. these are very important houses and all the important events of a native’s everyday life hinge around them. it is necessary to have a deep understanding of these four houses, which reveals the life as it is lived in the physical world. Taken together, they represent the immediate nature of human impulses. As the immediate is the most important aspect of one’s life, the Kendra houses are of supreme importance.
