Developing India: An Intellectual and Social History
Developing India: An Intellectual and Social History
Description
From the Jacket :

This unusual work delves into the underlying notions of progress, self-government, and nation building in development goals articulated in India in the late colonial period. The author considers how ideas of 'development' in India took shape in the 1930s and 1940s driven by immediate political battles, yet inspired by a vision of the future that incorporated notions of freedom and equity. He carries the narrative into the fifties, drawing on a variety of intellectual resources.

The argument is that alternative notions of development - consciously different from those based on free trade and industrialization - could emerge in the interwar period, when the future of capitalism did not appear as assured as it did in the ninettenth century.

Zachariah identifies three interlocking themes around which development was conceptualized during this period: the importance of science and technology; the need for the government to express certain social concerns; and the need for national discipline.

The book opens up a new arena in the historiography of South Asia, that of an intellectual history of late colonialism in India, and of the nationalism that succeeded it. Sharply analytical yet lucidly written, it will attract scholars and students of history, sociology, politics, urban studies, and cultural studies, as also historians of science and technology.

About the Author :

Benjamin Zachariah is lecturer in International History, Department of History, University of Sheffield.

Testimonials

I recieved my Mahavir pendant today. It is wonderful. I was recently in Delhi and as it was a spiritual trip visiting Jain temples in Rajasthan, Agra, Rishikesh and Delhi i did not have the opportunity to shop much. The pendant is beautiful and i shall treasure it. I have attached a picture of me in India. Your country and the people will always be in my heart.

It is always a great pleasure to return to Exotic India with its exquisit artwork, books and other items. As I said several times before, Exotic India is far more than a highly professional Indian online shop; it is in fact an excellent ambassador to the world for the splendour of Indian wisdom and spirituality. I wish a happy and successful New Year 2017 to Exotic India and its employees! You can be very proud of yourself!

My last order arrived in a reasonable amount of time, regarding the long way it had to take! I am glad to find this and some other ayurvedic remedy, as well as books and much other things at your online-store and I am looking forward to be your customer again, some time.
