Description
Back of the Book

Who will not be acquainted with this name? Ghalib considered to be the greatest Urdu poet of 19th century was born in 1792 in Agra but spent most of his life in Delhi. He wrote poetry in Persian and Urdu and is considered as the most popular poet of India whose poems have been translated not only into almost all the Indian languages but also in several other languages of the world. In one of his verses Ghalib wrote.

“Hoga Koi aisa bhi jo ‘Ghalib ko na jane?
Shayar to who achchha hai, pai badnam bahut hai”

Ghalib’s ancestors were recipients of many financial rewards from the British government in India because of their loyalty towards them. But Ghalib himself was against and that added to his financial problems. In 1850 he was invited into Darbar of the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar and was rewarded with several positions and a salary of fifty rupees a month. But in the year 1857 when the emperor was dethroned Ghalib was declared as anti government which deteriorated his financial position and health. This agony is clearly visible in many of his poems. He did in 1869 in Delhi.
