“Though thousands of years have passed, and we have no clue about these locks or the hidden treasures, we still continue to carry their strange keys as if under the spell of some lingering memory. Despite all the attacks on this memory - reason tries to shatter it from all sides, and the so-called modern intellectual does not accept it - the human heart still treasures and continues to be fascinated by it. So we ought to remember that although we are not aware of it today, somewhere in our unconscious is a resounding echo telling us that locks which once opened, still exist.”
Luminous and numinous, Osho’s words dance like fire yet refresh the reader like cool river water. At the core of his message one encounters the celebration of consciousness, the bliss of awareness, the power of presence, the serenity of silence, and the courage to free oneself from social conditionings and unconscious patterns. Perhaps that’s why every attempt to categorise Osho falls short.
What remains true is that his talks and meditations continue to inspire millions around the world. Hailed as one of the most innovative and creative contemporary geniuses, Osho is an experience impossible to ignore.
Whatsoever I am saying - whatsoever I am saying - is in many ways esoteric. That is why many times I become very confusing to you - because any exoteric teaching is never confusing, it is clear-cut. It is just like two plus two: It is always a simple thing - exoteric. But the esoteric-the inner, the secret - is difficult to understand, because your understanding becomes disturbed by any new knowledge which has to be absorbed.
You can easily absorb any knowledge that you know. It can become a part of you: you can digest it. But anything that is new to you has to be digested. And no esoteric knowledge can be delivered in mathematical terms. It has to be delivered mystically. It has to be delivered poetically. Then it becomes vague - it means many things simultaneously.
I have been in contact with many esoteric groups. I have also known many persons, still alive, who belong to a group. I have known many keys, which were delivered by authentic masters. But no key from an old tradition is enough, so I am devising new keys. Because I am devising new keys, I am not concerned directly with any esoteric group - because each esoteric group is interested and is entrusted with particular keys to preserve. I am not interested in particular keys. I am interested in devising new methods, new techniques, new keys - because all the old keys have become in many ways, irrelevant.
One thing needs to be understood, and that is that all these keys were developed in a world which was local - always local. For the first time, we are in a world which is absolutely non-local - universal. Really, for the first time we are in a world; otherwise, we were always confined to a particular part of the world. All those keys were developed for particular, locally conditioned cultures. Now, for the first time, the world is, in a way, a mess. These is no particular culture. There is no particular conditioning. Everything is mixed up. And soon this is going to be more and more: soon there will be a world citizen with no local background at all - with a universal background. Before this century ends, we will need - we are in need already - of keys which are universal.
Back of the Book
The real significance of temples, holy places and statues and the original purpose of mantras, astrology and incense have all been lost over the years. As we no longer know how to use them as jumping boards into the ultimate truth, they have either been debased into the mythical trappings of religions and “new age” beliefs or mocked by skeptics. But, explains Osho, once we understand that a higher consciousness is still flowing in these ancient places, all we have to do is turn in and stand in the middle of this stream “with the sails of our consciousness” open. Then, in such places, the inner journey is easier and faster than anywhere else.
“There are Many keys in Life which can open the doors of treasures even today, but unfortunately we neither know anything about these treasures nor about the locks which may be opened. And if we do not known either about the treasures or the locks, then what is left in our hands cannot even be called a key. It can only be a key if it opens a lock. This key has left a sort of lingering fragrance in the unconscious mind of man.”
