Indra and Shachi
Indra and Shachi
Description
The Indra of the Vedas is a very powerful king, the ruler of the heavens. But as we come to the epics we find he becomes more and more human. He faces a number of problems, the type that mortal kings face on earth. He has many enemies who seek to unsurp his kingdom. His wife is the beautiful Shachi. She is counted as one among great women like Anasuya, Savitri, Arundhati and Sita, to whom the husband was the sole lord. By their love and devotion to their husbands they have merited a place as ideals of Indian womanhood.

In the story of Indra and Shachi retold from the Mahabharata, we trace the fluctuating fortunes of Indra in his battle with the evil forces seeking to oust him. We see how the devotion of his wife leaves him unscathed through his tribulations.

Shachi is a figure many women admire and strive to emulate. This story is adapted from the Mahabharata. It is narrated to Yudhishthira before the Mahabharata war to console him for his sufferings.

Post Review
  • It amazes me how people confuse the Indra, Shakra of the Rig Veda with the Indra of the Purranas. They are not the same, period. For a more scholarly look at Indra Shakra Devanam, from the Rig Veda, and THAT Devas mantras, I highly recommend Dr. R.L. Kashyap's short book, Indra Lord of the Divine Mind. I wanted to let you know how happy we are with our framed pieces of Shree Durga and Shree Kali. Thank you and thank your framers for us. By the way, this month we offered a Puja and Yagna to the Ardhanarishwara murti we purchased from you last November. The Brahmin priest, Shree Vivek Godbol, who was visiting LA preformed the rites. He really loved our murti and thought it very paka. I am so happy to have found your site , it is very paka and trustworthy. Plus such great packing and quick shipping. Thanks for your service Vipin, it is a pleasure.
