Description

Foreword

The Government of India has established the central Institute of Indian Languages for the development and promotion of Indian languages which come into existence on 17the July 1969. In addition to language research including the study and development of tribal and border languages, the study of socio-linguistic aspects, bilingualism, online teaching project in Indian languages, etc., the Institute has established initially four-at present seven-Regional Language Centres for training teachers from Hindi speaking states in the languages of the VIII Schedule of the Constitution excluding Hindi and Sanskrit, in order to make them fit to teach these languages in the schools of their respective state to assist them in implementing the Three Language Formula more effectively in their school curricula. These Regional Language Centres started functioning from 11th August 1970.

This training programme runs for 10 months from July to April every year. The training consisting of 1100 clock hours to spread over 38 weeks with class room teaching of 5.30 hours a day. The training programme is divided into 3 parts, viz., Basic, Intermediate and Advanced consisting of 14, 10 and 12 weeks respectively.

The present text book is prepared for the Intermediate level of the training at the end of which the learners are expected not only to be able to speak the language concerned fluently, but also be able to read newspapers, magazines children’s books, etc., and write essays on given topics.

This book consisting of 30 lessons of which 20 are to be choosen every year and taught at the rate of two lessons per week depending on the standard of the learners, is brought out after experimenting the lessons in the classroom for 37 years.

Training o the selected teachers in the Regional Language Centres is not only in the language they choose, but also in basic linguistics, language methods, preparation of teaching materials and language testing and evaluation.

I hope that the present volume not only be useful to our Telugu training in the Southern Regional Language Centre but also to others who have some basic training in Telugu and intend to improve their knowledge and skills further in that language, thus helping the Institute indirectly in its endeavor in preserving and promoting multilingualism in the country which is one of the major objective of the Institute.
