Meandering Pastures of Memories
Meandering Pastures of Memories
Description
From the Book

Meandering Pastures of Memories is a fascinating tale of determination. Achievement. Insight and sincerity. The pastures of memories cover activities of Shovana Narayan. The protagonist. Which provide a vast. Multi-hued and multi-dimensional panorama that has subtly influenced her life and the society as a whole. It subtly reveals the dawn of a new era of dance reflecting humanity, harmony, feminism, dignity, dialogue and concern for global peace. Through the medium of dance, there is an unending dialogue between the self and dance as well as between the world and individual.

The volume brings her out as a 'citizen of the world', rooted in tradition yet keeping the windows and doors of her mind always open so as to inhale the fragrance of myriad cultures. Inspired by Indian philosophical and religious texts, yet her life has borne the stamp of harmonization of cultures across the globe. Her actions and thoughts speak volumes of her passionate love for her motherland and humanity. Yet the pragmatic in her surfaces to reveal that she is not blind to imperfections.

The volume has been divided aptly into four parts. The first part that deals with her growing years is devoted to her passion and pursuit of dance. This provides a glimpse into the social mood and concerns of society from the fifties to the seventies. The second part of the volume dedicates itself to the role played by her parents and family in her life, providing an insight into the developmental stages, economic and political, of young India. The third section deals with her marriage and motherhood, which is an honest account of her fears and expectations. This section also shows her keen sense of observation for it is rich in visual details of her travelogues of her 'gypsy life' with a diplomat. Finally, the fourth section that dwells on her personal musings provides a most fascinating glimpse of the real 'Shovana', the thinker, the researcher, the scholar, the humanist and the social activist.

About the About

Shovana Narayan is the most celebrated classical Kathak danseuse of India. Her phenomenal achievements in the world of dance have earned her several coveted laurels and titles. She has been conferred the most prestigious distinctions from the President of India of Padmashri as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi awards. Some of the other awards won by her include Delhi Govt's Parishad Samman, Rajiv Gandhi Puraskar, Bihar Gaurav Puraskar, Indira Priyadarshini Samman and Japan's Oisca Award. She ha become a living legend who has blazed a trail in Kathak, redefining the ethos and vocabulary of Kathak bestowing it with dignity and enriching it with a deeper and wider canvas of expression and dimensions. A consummate artiste and choreographer, a revered guru to her disciples and an intellectual, she combines artistry with keen observation and humanism and worked closely with nationally and internationally acclaimed Indian and western dancers and musicians from various streams of art. She epitomizes lyricality, grace as also confidence, loyalty and earthiness. The explorer and researcher within her have seen her author eight volumes on the subject of Indian dance that bespeaks her intensity, gravity and depth.

Born into a well-to-do family of Bihar, Shovana Narayan is a visionary, an activist and a charming re-definer of societal practices. She believes in the innate strength of woman and womanhood as she combines most successfully her full career of classical dance with her demanding career as a senior civil servant belonging to the Indian Audit and Accounts Service (1976 batch). Married to Dr Herbert Traxl, Austrian Ambassador, the two have a son, Erwin Ishan Traxl.

Shovana Narayan is a classical example of a true Kathak, multi-faceted and dynamic, and presents a challenge to today's spectator. Her life and her works have made her a role model and peer for millions of girls of the younger generation of today.

Preface

Every individual is endowed with multiple characters, multiple identities and facets. In respective journeys of life, each one of us though seems to meander from one facet to another, yet there is a latent string of continuity namely that of an eternal quest. At this phase of life, one does not know how long is the remaining journey to the infinite sea where one can lie down and nestle in its bosom. Beginning with a somber journey through the bubbliness of childhood the river of life steers its way serenely through many valleys. On encountering boulders on the way, sometimes it spreads mirthful sprays in an apparent bid to cloak revealing thoughts, and sometimes it allows itself to slide down gently allowing visibility to the troubling boulders. It inhales the fragrance of meadows, it carries salts and minerals and it witnesses joys and sorrows. In turn, it provides solace, comfort and life-giving water. It traverses through joys of adulthood, expectant parenthood and of growing maturity. However, one thing is certain that the experiences the river gathers while traversing through various terrains while winding its way through various pastures are enriching. It witnesses changing times and changing ethos for the journey is eternal…

I wanted to let you know how happy we are with our framed pieces of Shree Durga and Shree Kali. Thank you and thank your framers for us. By the way, this month we offered a Puja and Yagna to the Ardhanarishwara murti we purchased from you last November. The Brahmin priest, Shree Vivek Godbol, who was visiting LA preformed the rites. He really loved our murti and thought it very paka. I am so happy to have found your site , it is very paka and trustworthy. Plus such great packing and quick shipping. Thanks for your service Vipin, it is a pleasure.
