Description

Foreword

The Vadika Samsodhana Mandala had great pleasure in undertaking and completing the publication of the ‘Purva-mimamsa-Uddharana-Kosah’.

‘The Purva-mimamsa-Uddharana-Kosah’ is a book containing citations from the commentary of Sabara-swamin on Purva-mimamsa or Karma-mimamsa, Sutras of Jaimini (Sabara-bhasyam); the Tantra-vartikam and the Jaiminiya-Nyayamalavistarah. These citations are from most varied and intricate sources. The vast body of these citations cover the entire Vedic and allied literature viz. Vedas, Vedangas, Smrtis, Puranas, Ayurveda and also other Sanskrit literature. They are arranged according to Devanagari alphabetic order.

The plan of the presentation of this book is as follows:- First the source of the citation is given; then comes the text of the citation and the last is its allocation in the Purva-mimamsa treatise. A good number of citations was untraced. While going through the press, we have tried to trace out the origin of the many of them which have been presented in the appendix No.1 under the title of, yet many of the citations remained untraced. They have been given in appendix No.2 for the scholars to trace their origin. The special feature of this book would be that the editor has explained the Mantras of the Samans with their sources from the Rgveda, under the relevant. Sama citation.

The editor of this book, Shriman Dhannalal Jawaharlal Agrawal is a man of around ninty years of age. He represents the generation inspired by the great patriot and scholar, the late Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Though a man of business he vertically developed his studies in Sanskrit throughout the life, under the enlightened guidance of Dr. Kurtakoti, the Sankaracarya of Karavira Pitha. He has taken years of labour to prepare and complete this book. He deserves commendation as the job is very difficult and requires patience.

We express our deep sense of gratitude to Shriman Dhannalal Agrawal for not only giving the opportunity to the Mandala to publish this book but also for the generous donation to the Mandala. He also donated his collection of rare Sanskrit books to the Library of the Mandala, Shri. S.K. Navare, M. A. a research scholar of the Mandala, assisted me in the editorial arrangement of the text, in tracing the untraced citations and in the correction of proofs through the press, My thanks are due to him.

Vaidika Samsodhana Mandala has been brought under the Scheme of Adarsa Sanskrit Sodha Samsta; by the Central Ministry of Education, New Delhi, since June 1983. The Mandala thus receives an overall patronage from the central as well as from the State Government of Maharashtra. We record our deep sense of gratitude to both the Government for their kind patronage.

I hope this book will be of immense use to the scholars and students of Vedas and Purva-mimamsa.

Our Nandi sculpture arrived today and it surpasses all expectations - it is wonderful. We are not only pleasantly surprised by the speed of international delivery but also are extremely grateful for the care of your packaging. Our sculpture needed to travel to an off-lying island of New Zealand but it arrived safely because of how well it had been packaged. Based upon my experience of all aspects of your service, I have no hesitation in recommending Exotic India.
