Our ancients classified the diversified phenomena working in nature as Drishta (which can be viewed) and Adrishta (which can only be felt but can not be viewed). Physical sciences, biological sciences and other such sciences come under the category of Drishta. Matter is the basis for their development. Where as Adrishta does not have any material basis but is based on the mind. Believers of Adrishta all it occultism and name the allied subjects like Palmistry, Astrology etc. as occult sciences.
Man, the creature habitating our planet Earth is composed of the same elements as the Earth and other planetary bodies of the cosmos. The constituting elements have affinities and inaffinities among them selves. Human being made up of these elements displays affinities and inaffinities to the electromagnetic viberations coming from various planets and other cosmic bodies. The electro-magnetic viberations of various cosmic bodies predominate as certain specific influences generated out of the preponderance of specific elements in those bodies.
The planetary influences on every person at the time of birth get imprinted on his palm. For that time of birth astrologers cast a horoscope indicating positions of the planets in the Zodiac at that time. On the basis of lines and signs on the hand, a palmist delineates the psyche and life events of a person, where as an astrologer studies the birth horoscope and gives his impressions and findings about the psyche and future life of a person. The geographia of the hand is the natural horoscope of a person, created by that Supreme Creator.
It is believed that the eminent Heroes of Hindu mythology like Hanumana, Narada, Ganapati and of late Katyayana were experts in Palmistry. Even today the palmists of South India can tell your date of birth, Nakshatra and can cast your horoscope by examining your hands. They spell bound the consultant by telling the number of his coborns and the surviving ones. This they do by matching the hand print or thumb impression with the old manuscript they have and thus narrate the future written in that manuscript.
In Sanskrit Palmistry is called "Hasta Samudrika" a branch of "Samudrika Shastra", the study of signs and proportional formation of various visible organs of the human body. Through the knowledge of Samudrika Shastra, Hanuman told Sitaji in Lanka that Sri Rama had Trivali (three foldings in the skin) on the neck and stomach, the sign found with the king of kings. According to Narada, a person having the signs like Vajra, Dhawaja or Shanku on the soles of his feet becomes a king of kings.
In the present day world even the persons with scientific bent of mind are becoming more and more interested in the science of Palmistry and so it has been called a science here. The medical palmists of recent years like Noel Jaquin, Dr. Eugene Schemann and Dr. Charlotte Wolff have proved, this by relating medical facts to the lines, signs and make up of the hand. An educationist can guide his pupil in a better way by the application of principles of Palmistry. A psychiatrist can estimate in advance the intensity and course of development of psychic malady of his patient. Palmistry can be a better guide to predict the harmony and in harmony in marriage of the opposite sexes intending to marry. Nepoleon believed the human face can deceive but never the hand. Hitler of Germany used to consult occultist about his future. The forensic and criminal investigators identify the criminals through their hand prints. A rational mind will thus find himself convinced that Palmistry is a science providing a treasure of useful information.
Palmistry is also called Cheirosophy, has two branches, Cheirognomy and Cheiromancy. Cheirognomy is interpretation of the make up of the hands and fingers, while Cheiromancy is the study of various lines and sings on the hand to estimate the future and past events.
Let us first have a little more idea of Cheirognomy. A doctor diagnoses the disease first by observation. If the tongue is thickly coated, the patient does not evacuate satisfactorily and has constipation. Yellowness of the white of eyes, denotes jaundice. Similarly the palmist gets an idea of basic instincts of a person by the make up of his hands and fingers. The basic instincts are one's biological demands like thirst, hunger, sex and other sub-conscious reactions like anger, fear etc. Besides this Cheirognomy helps the palmist to gauge basic health defects. For example colour of the hand denotes. Ones level of energy and vitality. Actually the shape of the hand is very much linked with the development of one's brain. Fingers certainly tell about certain health abnormalities. The mount of Venus is linked with sexual passions, generosity etc. and is also known to be the third phalange of the thumb. In case of venereal diseases and diseases of sex glands, the thumb is affected. In frogs, during their mating season, the thumb swells and increases in diameter because of great sexual arousal.
The shortness of fingers denotes slow functioning of pituitary gland, the master gland that controls other endocrine glands and hence the person suffers from hypothyroidism, abnormal functioning of sex glands etc. the result of shortness of fingers is that the person becomes restless, hasty and impetuous. Abnormal development of the fore-finger indicates excessive pride and diseases of respiratory organs. The middle finger denotes gloom, melancholy and stomach conditions particularly of liver. The third finger tells about functioning of kidneys and any thinness denotes aberration of filteration system. The troubles of sex glands can be anticipated by the deformity, shortness or leanness of small finger.
The papillary ridges on the hand are formed during one's fourth month of foetal life in the womb. Any viral infection then to the pregnant mother creates permanent changes in the ridge pattern on the hands of foetus denoting physical and mental abnormalities, asthma, ulcer, rheumatism, kidney troubles, nervous disorders etc.
The other branch of Cheirosophy i.e., Cheiromancy deals with the psychological aspects as shown by one's hands. Dr. Eugene Schemann of U.S. says that the three main flexions or lines are formed during the fourth month of one's foetal life by the movement of the thumb and fingers. The lines on the hand have an intimate link with the sub-conscious mind of the person. According to Hindu philosophy the process of rebirth continues because of unfulfilled desires of previous births; this in combination with the force of one's previous birth's deeds makes his soul i.e., sub-conscious energy to change the old and worn out carrier (human body) and occupy a new one through the process of rebirth. According to Vedic philosophy Moksha or final emancipation is the situation when the subconscious mind has no desires life and then the soul merges with the Super Consciousness that controls whole of this exercise.
The force of Karma that will manifest through our subconscious mind is the destiny of this birth and appears on the palm as lines and signs. Thus the lines and signs on the hand are the electro-cardiograph of our subconscious mind. A palmist is like a physician who interprets this electro-cardiograph of our subconscious mind.
As there is continuous trend of changes in cultural, religious and material values of the society; accordingly the lines undergo changes in their interpretive factors in tune with the changes of social values. Therefore older readings of the lines do not fit well with modern values.
It is believed that the science of Palmistry originated in India and spread to other parts of the world through cultural and social exchanges. In ancient Greece and the West there were great thinkers and philosophers, who accepted new knowledge on its merits and further developed it. Palmistry is one such knowledge.
In ancient times gypsies practiced Palmistry in Europe ad America. In Europe during the dominance of Church, any such practice that challenged God by delineating future was called a "devil's act" and was completely prohibited in some of the countries. In Europe and Western countries some research and development of Palmistry was done during 15th to 18th century. Later on in 19th and 20th century, when the dominance of Church diluted and due to the advent of scientific thought, the science of Palmistry developed at a rapid rate. The great later contributers to its development were Desberroles, Benham, Noel Jaquin and Cheiro.
Cheiro's actual name was Count Louis Hammon, he belonged to Ireland, came to India hiding himself in a ship and studied the science of Palmistry under the able guidance of a Joshi Brahmin. This he disclosed in his Memoirs. Cheiro left the practice of Palmistry during later years of his life. On enquiring by some learned man, Cheiro's wife replied that Cheiro had lost the Yantra that helped him in predicting accurately and it is since then he had lost the ability to predict.
As discussed earlier Palmistry is not a material science like chemistry, where experimental facts always substantiate the exactness of science. The human being is not only a combination of various elements but also possesses sub-conscious mind, soul and reasoning faculty that make him the best creation of the Almighty. The other less evolved creatures get satisfied by just meeting out their daily needs like food, shelter and reproduction. But meting out these daily needs just do not satisfy human being. He requires something else which would soothe his psyche. So Palmistry is more the study of the psyche of this most complex creation of the God. Therefore Palmistry has much to do with the psychology of a person. The fulfillment of material aspirations to a great extent depends upon the psyche of a person. Palmistry is a science because for one aspect of life various signs on the hand have to be studied and result deduced. Predicting disasters or fortunes just by looking at one sign on the hand is not the domain of Palmistry but quackery, which could lead an aspiring gentleman to despondency.
Thus, Palmistry is a very serious discipline that requires continuous study along with fair amount of patience. A beginner is required to verify various principles through the study of the hands of different persons and record his findings. One should start by studying his own hands and of those closer to him. This would facilitate him in verifying the principles because he already knows is own and their life trends. Then one should pass on to other persons but refrain predicting any thing serious unless one is quite proficient and sure. Neither talk negatively nor dishearten the consultant rather alleviate his sufferings by psychotherapy and other remedial measures. A palmist should tell his client that he is bound to reap the crop generated out of his previous birth's deeds and the information for that is available on his hand. But he is at the same time free to some extent to mould the coming events in his favour through his will power.
The tips of fingers and the mounts on the palm are the areas that are full of nerves and these nerves have direct link with our mind rather subconscious mind. Our sub-conscious mind is the record room of our previous deeds. The construction and shape of the hand, fingers, mounts and lines, all are the manifestation of this sub-conscious desire. This sub-conscious mind is fully conscious during the stay in the womb. It is at that time when these factors get generated.
It is very difficult to change these factors later on in external life, however some changes in the lines can be obtained by exercising a very strong will power. By the execution of will-power, first a habit-pattern has to be developed. That habit pattern gets engraved on the sub-conscious mind and we then function that way even unknowingly. With the change of our psyche, the sub-conscious mind makes necessary alterations in the lines by changing the course of already existing lines, creating some new or eliminating the old ones.
WE frequently notice that some minor lines appear or vanish, some main lines extend or shorten. This all is due to the changes in life circumstances and external impressions on our life pattern. But this happens only when such impressions have a deep impact on our subconscious mind.
Physiology establishes that the left hemisphere of human brain is concerned with the analytical faculties and intentions to engage in something worthwhile. This left hemisphere is related to the right hand, the indicator of conscious effort. The right hemisphere is related to the left hand and represents feelings, emotions and other racial traits, the subconscious manifestations.
According to the established palmists, the left hand denotes those traits that come by birth, while the right hand shows what one has achieved by his own deeds and efforts. Therefore always study the right or non working hand for his inherited traits.
In case of a left hander the functional hand is left o it should be studied as the prime hand.
About the Book
Man is the most complete creation of God on our planet Earth, has been blessed by the discriminating curious mind, so he developed various methods of delineating the future. Some men adopt the astrological methods while others study the hand for the purpose. Also there is the science of omens to predict the immediate course of events. Most of such methods have evolved through the incomplete conscious mind of man, therefore chances of error are always there. Human hand is the most natural gift having direct link with the human subconscious mind, the store house that controls and delineates the past, present and future of a man.
This work "The Principles of Palmistry" is a sincere effort for easing out the study Palmistry. The perfection in hand reading comes through clear cut comprehension in hand reading comes through clear cut comprehension of the laws of hand reading, concentration of mind and a comparative study of various signs and formations on the hand. The present work has two parts. The first part deals with the makeup of hand, which to a great extent speaks about one's mental and physical characteristics, disease propensities and occupational probabilities. The second part deals with the study of lines, the prophetic aspect of the hand called Cheiromancy which is largely dependent on the frame work provided by Cheirognomy. The hand prints included in the volume will facilitate the reader to comprehend the principles distinctively.
