Preface

Ayurveda is a system of Indian medicine now practiced all over the world as a complementary system. Herbs have been prime medical agents in traditional and holistic therapies. From the time immemorial plants have been utilized, praised and worshipped by mankind. Millions of people for centuries have worshipped several trees thinking that their every part possesses deity such as Lord Brahman in the root, Lord Vishnu in the bark, Lord Shiva in the branches and many Gods in the leaves. Ayurvedic practitioners have identified a number of medicinal preparations for curing various ailments and diseases, which are not completely curable in other systems.

Ayurvedic medicine has become an increasingly accepted alternative medical treatment in America during the last two decades. Foreword

Contribution of Ayurveda to Health care in India is very significant and by late it is appreciable. The global recognition to this health science is making it possible to explore it in depth.

The rich knowledge base of Ayurveda, especially that which amassed in the texts is both enormous and contributory to the science of health and treatment. It is also necessary to pool very effective remedies and formulations spread out in large number of scriptures.

The present work “Simple remedies for common maladies” is a significant leap towards achieving this goal.

The authors- a good continuation of experience and youthful enthusiasm has given the remedies, which are useful in various diseases. The medications, that include from Simple juices and Decoctions to Churnas, Vatis and Rasouhadies. As a matter of fact different combinations of medicines are not for the common man to use but for the usage of practitioners. Even the faculty and clinical students can study these combinations in detail to understand the significance, pros and cons, while prescribing, because there may not be an ideal set of formulations for a disease. Naturally it varies according to different variables. However those which are given in the present book can be good guidelines especially for young practitioners of Ayurveda.

The book is picturesque as it consists of many photographers of plants (though repeated in different pages) which add value. Both Sanskrit names and Latin names are given.

“The Simple remedies for common maladies” is a work which itself is contribution in the area of Chikitsa. It is for the Ayurvedic doctors to utilize it judicially, applying the proper principle of diagnosis and treatment of Ayurveda.

I whole heartedly welcome this book to the Ayurveda Vangmaya and hope that it will further enhance the effort to boost the confidence of Ayurvedic treatments, especially the younger practitioners.
