About the Book:

This book presents the socio-cultural life of ancient India an the basis of data drawn from the Carakasamhita. Indian religious as well as secular literature and Greek and Chinese accounts are utilized for corroborative data. Thus a convincing picture of ancient Indian life has been constructed in which the facts noticed in Caraka are given critical analysis, interpretation and assessment for their historical value. The author found the ancient Indian medical literature a rich source of material for study and research in ancient Indian society and culture.

About the Author

Dr. Aparna Chattopadhyay has been carrying on research in unbroken continuity since her college days, and has more than 200 published papers. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland in 1966. She worked in Banaras Hindu University for 29 years as a Lecturer and as a Reader.

The book in a part of my post-doctoral research project on ‘the social Life of Northern India from 320 B.C to 319 A.Do.' Working on this project I collected matter from the Carakasamhita. The data thus collected were found suitable for a monograph on Caraka. I was encouraged by my ‘guru’ Late Prof. V. S. Agrawal to prepare the monograph. Though money was received from U.G C. for the publication of the said monograph, it was not utilised in time. So I got some of the chapters of the book published as research papers. The details of those papers are given in the Appendix.

I am presenting the book before the readers without Bibliography, Index, Errata and without diacritical marks. I believe the scholars will be able to find out the books consulted and used, without Bibligrophy since those are all works of renowned authors. And even without Index they will be able to locate the names and words. There are printing mistakes; but in will not be difficult to understand what are the correct words.
