Preface

Vastu Chintamani is my humble offering to the lovers of the Science of Indian Architecture. It provides a basic introduction to the essential principles of building construction.

This is a book of basics because it attempts to explain the rationale of the Vastu principles behind every building. It is neither a too detailed text nor just an enumeration of the laws of Vastu Sastra. Rather it draws attention to some of the indispensable features that has its roots in the sacred scriptures - Vedas, Brahmanas, Upanishads and Srimad Bhagavad Gita.

Vastu Chintamani is primarily aimed at the students of ICAS for their Vastu Praveena and Vastu Acharya certificates. The book is structured according to the syllabus prescribed by ICAS; however, the style and content of the book is such that I hope even others can be benefitted.

This book is a compilation of thoughts and knowledge I received from my revered Guru Sri AB Shuklaji, Hon'ble National President of Indian Council of Astrological Sciences (Regd) Chennai. I have collected these thoughts of Sri Shuklaji from his lectures, class notes, private discussions and the classical literature he suggested me to refer.

I started writing this book by repeating (Tulasidas). I have tried to gather the beautiful pearls of wisdom that flowed from Sri Shuklaji's teachings and make a garland out of it; needless to say, if there are any unwanted pearls in this garland, it is purely because of my limitation only.

Writing this book has taught me many things and brought many friends closer to me. I thank Sri Ashish Sharma for discussing with me what we learnt and never allowing me to rest before the book was completed. I thank Sri Kuldeep Jiwani for adding beautiful illustrations. A special thanks to Sri Jeyaram, Hon. National Vice President of ICAS who ably edited and gave a shape to my rough writing.

I sincerely thank Sri M Anjaneyuluji, Hon. Controller of Examinations, ICAS for publishing this book and to all the other office bearers of ICAS, the illustrious organization started by Dr B V Raman. ICAS is my spiritual mother and has guided my life wonderfully.

This book is a token of gratitude to my Guru and ICAS, my spiritual mother and I have willfully offered all the rights and proceedings of this book to CoE-ICAS.

Foreword

Architectural tradition of India is a rich source of learning. When people are worried about the effects of destruction of nature by human beings, it is a matter of pride and happiness that traditional Indian science of architecture, Vastu, is gaining lot of popularity today.

There are lot of misconceptions, mistreatment and misleading ideas about Vastu today. Most of the Vastu books available in the market today neither follow scriptures nor offer any solutions for the changing times and tastes. Blind application or wiIlful misinterpretation of the ancient principles is seen.

Vastu is a science rooted in the insights of Vedic rishis. It is a product of their tapasya. Their awareness of living harmoniously with nature to lead a happy life gave us the science of Vastu. The word science is not just confined to the empirical experience. It is comprehensive and holistic developed with an awareness of deep secrets that are beyond our sensory perceptions.

The Rishis gave this invaluable knowledge based on how this universe was created and utilise that knowledge for harmonious living. Unless we go deep into the knowledge available in the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita etc and integrate them with the principles of Vastu, a proper understanding and application is not possible.

I am happy this book by Sri Navneet Kaushik meets this long- standing demand for such a book. A young and committed scholar having vast knowledge of both Vastu and Jyotisha, he has drawn from various sources to present a clear picture of the principles of Vastu in a lucid manner. The book contains lot of illustrations, results of right and wrong placements and more importantly the rationale of principles behind Vastu. There are many practical covered too to help the beginner.

This book is being published by the Indian Council of Astrok Sciences, a premier institution dedicated to spreading the know of Jyotish, Vastu, Palmistry and allied sciences. Founded by D Raman, popularly known as Abhinava Varahamihira, ICA dedicated to teach, research and publish these ancient sciences in the most rational manner.

In this age of commerce and profit, it is laudable that Sri Nav Kaushik has given all the rights of this book to the COE-IC including the proceedings as his dakshina to our spiritual me ICAS.

I commend the author, book and congratulate the Office of Controller of Examination of ICAS for publishing this book. I am sure this will be a handy reference to the students studying the vastu course.

Introduction

Vastu is a traditional Hindu science of architecture developed over a period of time. Our seers worked on this science since time immemorial and gave a divine gift in the form of Vastu, a way of scientific dwelling. They were great observers of nature. They observed every minute impact of nature on the living beings and in the meditative state got the revelation that whatever is outside in the universe, the same is also inside our body (yat pinde tat brahmande). Working on this principle, they framed various Laws of dwelling as science of Vastu. Compilation of these laws is mainly available in the Vedas and Upanishads.

The picture below shows an example of “yet pinde tat brahmande”. The body consists of five basic elements. These elements are present in the body in a particular order as represented by five lower chakras in the body. Same order can be seen on the earth too.

We can understand the importance of Vastu from the fact that our body comprised of the five elements connects with the same five elements present in the nature. It nurtures the living beings, gives energy and takes care of every need. It has all the colours to match each activity in our life. Living the same way as nature is the best way to survive and grow instead of going against it and perish. Living in Harmony with the nature is the basis of Vastu. This equates to sailing with the current of river or going against it. Going against the current means spending more energy to survive and in the end may succumb to the conflicting forces.

Properties of these five elements along with the gravitational force Sun’s movements from east to west and magnetic force from north to south control the complete surrounding. Living in harmony with these invisible forces which are effective 24X7 definitely makes the life comfortable. Vastu is a science based on direction that unifies the architecture and astrology to extract the beneficial energy of the cosmos.

The world “Vastu” is derived from the word “Vas” which means to reside. By adding “tu” as suffix, the word becomes Vastu which means dwelling place or abode.

Vastu operates at three levels on the human beings:

• Physical level
• Mental level
• Spiritual Level

We need to follow the vastu principles to derive the benefit on all these three levels and finally feel the bliss.

At Physical level, health is the foremost requirement to enjoy the pleasures and bear the pains. A light pain can turn into a nightmare if the health is not good.

Next is the mental or psychological level. This is an important need to be happy. A person with all the physical comforts can still be unhappy and stressed. Whereas, a person with meagre means and comforts in life can be contents and joyful. The psychological state of affairs decides this.

In the final level, understand the spiritual need as it remains unnoticed. This ignorance does not allow us to remain happy forever. Everybody wants to be happy but rarely do we come across an every happy person because the happiness does not stay for long. One day you are happy for some reason and on other day you become sad for some other reason . The joy and Happiness which depends on the external factors cannot give permanent happiness. Happiness which is not caused by any positive even in life is of more value as it is not dependent on anything. Bliss is not dependent on outside factors like pleasures and paints. A State of bliss which is unaffected by external circumstances comes at the spiritual level.
