Book Description

About the Book:

This is an index to personal name sin the Indian history from the earliest to 1947 based on the eleven volumes of The History and Culture of the Indian People published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai, 1953-77 (includes second edition of vol. 2). There are a number of biographical dictionaries containing personal names from the Indian history, but these are good only for people who are well known. There is hardly any work that includes less known people. This is an inclusive work describing briefly every person who appeared in that set in any capacity, his dates when possible followed by the volume and page number where that name appeared, thereby making this Directory useful for research scholars and casual students of Indian history, alike.

There are a number of biographical dictionaries containing personal names from the Indian history, but these are good only for people. This is an inclusive work describing briefly every person who is well known. There is hardly any work that includes less know people who appeared in that set in any capacity, his dates when possible followed by the volume and the page number where that name appeared, thereby making this Directory useful for research scholars and casual students of Indian history, alike. The contents of the volumes may help to place the person in a proper chronological perspective if his dates are not available.

Every effort has been made to give the names exactly the way they appear in the set, so one may find a similar name written in more than one ways or one with a diacritic and the other without one. These names have been linked with 'see' and 'see' also reference.' A few abbreviations, such as EIC for East India Company, INC for Indian National Congress, ADC for Aide-de- camp, INA for Indian National Army and CPI for Communist Party of India, have been used.I thank University of Toronto for granting me a year of sabbatical leave to collect the information for this Directory.

I am also thankful to Manish khera, Jerome Kudera, Cheryl Cosento and Abhishek Prakash for helping me to set up my computer and the software I used to produce this Directory. I am thankful to Prof. Narendra Wagle, Director, South Asia Program, University of Toronto, for many useful suggestions. I am also thankful to Larry Langford of Robarts Library, University to Toronto for her assistance.

I am also grateful to my wife, Kiran, my daughter Mala and her husband, Andrew, my son, Manish and his wife, Rekha, for being very supportive while I was working on this project.
