Introduction to the New Edition

Amongst all the essential commodities for the upkeep of a healthy and vigorous life water alongside food is one of the most prominent. Water not only slakes our thirst but also provides us with many of the basic mineral salts we badly require to maintain a balanced metabolism. Air, earth, fire, water and sky were believed to be the basic elements by the ancient sages of the orient. All play an important role in our everyday lives. The Hindus have accepted this fact for thousands of years and all indigenous treatments have revolved around these elements. This is demonstrated by the fact that they had originally deified these elements as is evident in the Vedas. Even today they play a prominent role in their religious rituals. Water had become a way of life to them. On reflection this may also be found in other major religions of the world too, where the symbolism may differ but the reasoning remains much the same.

In other parts of the world water is equally important and the possession of the sources of pure water often led to war. In arid places like the Arabian peninsular possession of wells were sources of wealth and power, in fact the power of life and death to many. Water has always been a source of mystery-its infathomable depths and tremendous power intimidating the feeble attempts of man to tame it. That our bodies are made up mostly of water is also a pointer to the vital role that it plays in our existence. Science tells us that life came from water in the form of single celled amoeba and that we owe our origins to these humble life forms. Whether it is plant life or the animal kingdom without water all is doomed to totally disappear.

Our so called modern advancement and scientific knowledge has unfortunately, led us far away from what can be called a natural way of living in harmony with our environment. In our haste to develop we have abused the natural resources, so vital to our everyday lives. For example indiscriminate dumping of waste material has polluted these resources to such an extent as to render them almost totally use less. We are now faced with the situation that we either clean up our act or die. This is what we have done with our resources and we are attempting to do the same, quite successfully one might say with our bodies and our minds as well.

This book attempts to bring into perspective the important role that water plays in our lives. The author in very lucid language elucidates on the healing qualities that water holds out for us. He discusses the simple remedies that have evolved over the centuries and have been found very efficacious in solving many of the problems, which afflict that body and the soul. Many of these methods have been discussed over the years in both the East and the West but it is the basic understanding of the life giving properties that have been overlooked. It is, as the author points out that it is the reasoning behind it that has to be understood fully not just the application.

Much obviously depends on the faith that one places in such therapies for a doubting mind is not the most conducive medium in exacting a cure. Reflection over the foods and beverages that we have over the years conditioned our systems to absorb and the long term effects that they have on our vitality only comes into action once we fall seriously ill and by then it may be much too late. If this can be done before the symptoms of severe infirmity actually appear and remedial steps are taken once the inherent faults that we have adopted are identified then there is still some hope. It is said that "you cannot teach an old dog new tricks," but there is no harm in trying. For here what we basically have is a completely reverse situation where we have forced ourselves to forget our origins and the things that are really productive. Natural therapy does not require common sense applied I the right direction and a conscious attempt to revert to a state of living that brings us into communion with nature is all it takes.
