Author's Preface

The Odia Bhagavat (pronounced as 'Bhagabata' in Odia language) written in the 15th century A.D. by Atibadi Jagannath Das, the crown saint of Utkal, is a precious and invaluable book in the history of Odisha. The influence of this experiential literature on spirituality in Odia language created by the five Saints namely Shri Jagannath Das, Shri Jashobant, Shri Shishu Anant, Shri Balaram Das and Shri Achyutanand Gosain of the Pancha-sakha era, particularly the Bhagavat of Shri Jagannat Das, Finds a mention in the history of Odisha in golden letters.

The Bhagavat, written by Atibadi Jagannath Das in Odia, had influenced the main stream of Odisha's life for centuries. The study of Bhagavat at Bhagavat Tungis (places of religious congregation in the villages or Odisha), in schools and at every home had become an indispensable part in the life of the Odia's for centuries. There is not an iota of doubt that Odia Bhagavat had deeply influenced the spiritual consciousness, social consciousness and the educational and literary world of Odisha. Today in Odisha, as a result of the modern educational system and the newly awakened social-consciousness, one may not find the past influence of the Odia Bhagavat, but there will be no Odia who would have some knowledge about Odia Bhagavat. Wven today, Odia Bhagavat is recited during religious festivals and in the templeas well as in religious and literary congregations where it is frequently referred to Hence, Atibadi Shri Jagannath Das and Shrimad Bhagavat Maha POurana are worthy of our reverence for all times to come.

Many years ago, I had heard one of my near relatives singing dome lines from this Odia Bghagavat. I remember four lines of the Bhagavat which I recite mentally at times and derive utmost delight. The same is quoted below:-

"Govinda Govinda Govinda, Padu Khyaruchi Makaranda
Se Makaranda Paana Kari, Hele Tarile Brajanaaree"

This means "Oh Govinda! From Your Holy feet, honey like nectar always floes. Drinking this honey nectar, the women of Vraj (Gopi of the Indian epic called Mahabharat) got salvation".

The beautiful and exotic to me in which she had sung these few lines had attracted me immensely and touched me to the quick. In 2001, I again had the chance of listening to her recital of these line. This had illuminated my mind with exalted emotion, rhythm and emagination. One around 11 p.m in the latter half of 2001 (I don't remember the exact day) as I settled down to write a song on Sadguru Shri Sainath Maharaj, four lines in "Nabakshari Chhand" (a poetic meter of nine letters in each line in a couplet) started following spontaneously in my mind in the same sweet tune as heard earlier. The same is quoted below:-

"Shri Gurudeba Gurudeba, Praana Mo Khoje Paada Taba
Tuma Shri Payara Dhyaanare, Ekaagrataa Aase Manaer"

This means "Oh Shri Gurudev (Oh the Master)! My soul ever yearns for Your feet. When I meditate on Your feet, only then my mind gets absorbed in it".

While writing these four lines, I had entered into the plain of divine ecstasy imperceptively and my entire night passed away in that state. Those four lines of the first day have taken the shape of "Shri Guru Bhagavat" containing about sixteen thousand lines. My eagerness to write had so accentuated that I arranged that I arranged to keep a thick note book (diary) always with me.

I had never imagined that whatever I was writing in "Nabakshari Chhand" and singing mentally during 2001-2008 would be published in an appropriate from and in the shape of a book named "Shri Guru Bhagavat". As the thoughts started flowing spontaneously, I went on writing keeping Guru in my mind, there was no conscious effort to write in a subject-wise or chapter-wise form.

While at home or while going to the office or while travelling outside Delhi, I used so carry the diary with me and wherever any thought relating to my Sadguru appeared in Nabakshari style, I used to record it immediately. Sometimes at night,, I went on writing hundred of lines till the early hours of dawn. It will not be an exaggeration to say that this had become my second nature.

Later, when the time came for the publication of these writings in the form of a book, I rearranged these writings theme-wise and chapter-wise.

Volume I of the Shri Guru Bhagavat contains three chapters. The first chapter is no Sadgurus (Perfect Masters), Gurus (Masters), santhas (Saints) and Sanyasai (Ascetics). The second chapter deals with Guru-Shishya relationship. The third chapter deals with Spiritual Initiation by the Guru in a detailed manner.

Volume II described the Divine characteristics of the Sadguru, the Divine signs on the body of Shri Guru, the power of miracles of Shri Guru, the relationship between the Guru and the disciple, Divine Grace, the transference of Power, the theory of Universe and the theory of Guru and some portions from the science of Death.

Volume III deals with Dharma (Religion), the knowledge of Death (Mrityu-Vidya), the theory of Karma-Phala (action-reaction syndrome of Hindu spiritual science) and Guru Sadhana (Meditation of Guru).

Volume Iv is devoted to God realization (Ishwar Prapti), difference between Guru's worship and wordhip of the Hindu Deities, Yoga-Sadhana (Principles of Yogic Practices), Devotion, Spiritual/Occult etc.

Like 'Brahma Tattwa' (Root theme of the Absolute Reality), 'Maha Tattwa' (True knowledge of the Creation), this 'Guru Tattwa' (True knowledge of Guru) is an essential part of the all-pervasive Nature (Mahaprakriti).

The contributory role of Guru in the spiritual evolution of the Sadhakas (spiritual aspirants), Yogis and Devotees is unimaginable.

This not only seen in Hinduism, but in other religions as well. Gurus are of many types and are called by different names like Shiksha Guru (Guru imparting education), Kul Guru (Family Guru), Mantra Guru (Guru who initiates by reciting mantra in the ears), Varna Guru (Guru of the clan), Deeksha Guru (Guru Giving initiation) etc. but it is only the Sadgurus (Perfect Masters), who through their power spiritually evolve the Jeevatmas (the beings) and lead to God realization.

It is said that there can be difference of opinion even among the Saints. I pay due respect to every view in the spiritual world even if they seem to be at a variance with each other. I am of the firm view that by appreciating the essence of different paths, a spiritual aspirant can acquire the knowledge and can realize 'Brahma' by holding on to the path ordained for him.
