About the Artist

Ustad Bismillah Khan was born as Oamaruddin on 21st March, 1916 at Dumraon village in Bihar. His ancestors used to play Shehnai at the Banke Bihari Temple in Dumraon. He spent his childhood at Benaras under the care and guidance of his three maternal uncles - Ali Bux, Vilayat Hussain Khan and Sadique Ali. Ali his uncles were Shehnai players for the Kashi Vishwanath Temple at Benaras. Apart for his uncles, he had training in Drupad from Ahmad Khan of Lucknow and pt. Laxmi Prasad of Benaras and in Khaya' from Mohammad Hussain of Delhi.

He started giving his public performances from the tender age of 14 years. His performance at the Akhil Bengal Sangeet Sabha in 1936 at Calcutta got him recognition and his broadcasts of Shehnai Vadan on All India Radio in 1938 established him as much sought after artiste.

Ustadji has enriched his Shehnai Vadan by bringing into it Alapi like Khayal singing, Jhala like Sitar and Sarod, Tatkar like Kathak dance, Harkat like Sarangi and Violin, continuity of tone like Been and also sweetness of Basuri. He has complete mastery over Swar Vilas, Meend, Ghasit, Ghamak, Behlao, Lonch and Laffa. His proficiency in Foonk, Nomtom, Kanaswara, Gayaki Ang and Tatkari Ang have made him different from other artistes of his era.

He establishes Raga very quickly in his performance. He is a complete master of Classical and Semi- Classical Music. He has elevated Shehnai from folk instruments to a concert level instrument. His name has become synonymous with Shehnai. He is recipient of several prestigious musical awards and coveted Bharat Ratna of Government of India.

During the last 50 years we have recorded Ustad Bismillah Khan on 78 RPM Discs, EP Discs, LP Discs, Cassettes and Compact Discs. From his vast repertoire of excellent Ragas each and every performance is a Hit in its own right. Here we have compiled Ragas like Bhimpalas, Yaman, Malkauns and compositions like Poorbi Dhun, Chaiti, Kajri, which are mind blowing. His Shehnai will echo in the hearts of listeners forever.
