Parvati is said to be the recipient of Shiva's wisdom in the form of the Tantras, but it is Kali who seems to dominate Tantrik iconography, texts and rituals, especially in left handed Tantra.

This four armed goddess has a frightening appearance, what with a third eye in the centre of her forehead and a blood soaked tongue hanging out. Necklaces of various lengths adorn her neck followed by a garland of flowers and that of human heads. To add to the ghastly effect, her girdle is made of chopped hands. Her long hair flow in all directions, lending movements and energy in total contrast with the calm and passive Shiva on whose body Kali is dancing. He holds a blow horn and the hour-glass shaped drum in his hands and his trident lies beneath him.

If the terrible appearance was not enough, her favourite haunt heightens her fearsome nature. She is seem here in the cremation ground strewn with bones and skulls with jackals feasting on them. Also seen are goblins and 'pishach', the evil spirits.
