A yantra, such as this, is a diagram which acts as a receptacle for the power of a mantra. It is the outward form of a divinity, while a mantra is the deity's subtle form.

The yantra, comprising of several triangles intersecting each other, forms the centre of this diagram. The triangles pointing upwards are symbolic of fire and represent the god and the downward pointing triangles represent the goddess (yoni). The red and yellow triangles rest on a green circle. Outside this, in a concentric circle, are the petals of a lotus, numbering eight. This again is painted red, a colour symbolic of energy. The whole diagram is contained within a square 'bhupura' or a ground plan with four gateways in the cardinal directions. The bhupura is coloured in fiery orange, diminishing the impact of other colours.

The yantra painted in the simple style of Madhubani stands out for its natural beauty and charm, pure colours and form.
