Art and nature walk hand in hand and reciprocally aid and assist each other. With a wealth of birds around, we are never short of ornithological inspiration. The artist of Rajasthan has kept this in mind while making this impressive painting on a marble plate.

This plate depicts the nocturnal bird of prey. Scientifically speaking, it belongs to 'Strigiformes' order, having a broad head with large eyes that are surrounded by disks of modified feathers and directed forward. In Hindu religious mythology, the owl is also worshiped on the festivals of Kartikeya, the second son of Shiva and Parvati.

Here the owl is perched on a branch of a tree with the help of its sharp claws. The plump body is covered with feathers in small brush strokes. The wings make for the rotundity of its body. The features above the eye look more muscular than hairy. The eyes look protruding since the eyelids are missing. The beak is small and helps it catch small reptiles and insects.

Paintings like these convey the beauty and grace of birds in their environment, giving pleasure to countless bird lovers.

The owl is one bird which is unattractive but known for its wisdom, though no fact seems to have ever been stated to justify it being called wise.
