Hariharan had his initial training in Carnatic music and is the son of well known Carnatic musicians Alamelu Mani and Late H.A.S. Mani. But he soon switched over to the Hindustani style of singing, which he learned from Padmashree Ghulam Mustafa Khan. The eighties evoked ghazal singing as a popular form of music and Hariharan, a science graduate, and a qualified lawyer, chose this as his profession. He learned the nuances of the complex Urdu language, a pre-requisite for ghazal singing. His very first album Ghazal Ka Mausam spelt such success that he has positioned himself at the very helm of this genre today. With a number of film songs to his credit too beginning with the film Gaman under music director Late Jaidevji, who spotted him in 1977, he has sung over 300 songs. His song Dil Ne Dil Se in Haqeeqat won him the best Male Playback Singer Award in 1995. Hariharan won his National Award for the song Mere Dushman Mere Bhai in the film Border. Hariharan has sung in a number of Tamil films and has quite a line of hits. In 1999 he bagged all the top awards of the Tamil industry. A highly versatile artiste, Hariharan’s oeuvre ranges from ghazal singing to pop and film music. For this album he has chosen to sing the vintage poets Meer & Daag Dahelvi among others.
