With more than 150 movies to her credit, Hema Malini continues to rule the silver screen even today. With blockbusters like Sholay, Sita aur Gita, Johny Mera Naam, Andaaz, Lal patthar, Razia Sultan, Satte Pe Satta and Baghbaan, Hema Malini ranks as none of the best actors in indian cinema. Hema Malini is known to be the only Bollywood actress to pursue a career in dance along with a flourishing film career. She has grown up surrounded by the sound of applause and the spotlight. Today everyone remembers her more as a film star but there would be no Hema Malini without her dance. She has been dancing since the age of six clearly remembers every moment when she learnt a new adavu (dance step). Dance is her oldest and most loyal companion. Her unremitting passion for dance has proved to the world that a mainstream actress can excel in another equally taxing art form, namely classical dance.

She is an exponent of Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi and Mohiniattam. Her mastery of Bharatnatyam has found appreciative audience all over the world. Many cultural organizations in India and abroad have bestowed numerous titles on her in recognition of her services to the art of classical dance. Her unending passion for dance also encouraged her to launch an institution dedicated to dance and other associated art forms, popularly known today as Natyavihar Kalakendra. Natyavihar Kalakendra has presented many Dance dramas which have been acclaimed for their factual and visual appeal. The institution is exploring contemporary themes, for presenting as stage visuals in the near future.

Bhakti Ras is an initiative by Times Music that features audio excerpts from Hema Malini’s most popular classical dance ballets- Radha Krishna, Yashoda Krishna, Meera Mahalakshmi, Durga, Nritya Malika, Ramayan and Krishna Balram. The album features some of the leading singers of the country like Suresh Wadkar, Jesudas, Roop Kumar Rathod, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Ravindra Jain, Ashit Desai and Mahalakshmi lyer.
