About The Audio CD

People who have embraced “Hinduism” strongly believe that the only way to get Moksha (Liberation) is through “Sharanagati or Total Surrender” to the Lord. Many a poet from the earliest of times in Southern India have composed and sung songs on Lord Shiva praising him for his grand appearance, beauty, acts of compassion and achievements. However, the most famous of them are the four Nayanmars, viz, Manickavaachagar, Appar, Sundarar and Gjana Sambhandar of the 5-6th centuries A.D. until Andal Aazhwar came to the scene in the 8th century AD, her Tirupavai songs in Praise of Lord Krishna (Hari). The Nayanmars’ works were called, ‘Tiruvachagam” and “Tevaram”. There were other poets such as Muthu Tandavar, Marimuthapillai, the carnatic music trinity, Gopala Krishna Bharathi who have also praised Lord Shiva in their songs.

The set of songs of Tyagaraja chosen for the album, has six Ksetra kritis—three of which are in praise of Shiva as Sundareshwar at Kovoor near Chennai, two are in praise of Panchanatheeshwara in Tiruvaiyaru and one is praised as Sapta Rishi in Lalgudi near Tiruchi. In addition, the song in Chitha Ranjini Ragam titled- Naada Tanum Anisham and the one in Sindhuramakriya ragam titled –Devadi Deva Sada Shiva are also included.

In the Chiththa Ranjini ragam song, Tyagaraja opines that the saptha Swaras, ‘Sa’, “Re’, ‘Ga’, ‘Ma’, ‘Pa’, ‘Da’, ‘Ni’, originated from the five faces of Lord Shiva –Sadhyojatham, Aghoram, Eshanam, Vamadhevam, and Tatpurusham. Here, he reiterates the earlier concept of “Sarangadeva” that Lord Shiva has “Nada’ for his corpuscular form. Tyagaraja states that Lord Shiva is his protector, not withstanding the fact that Lord Rama was his personal deity.

The song Devadi Deva Sada Shiva is full of praise for Shiva and describes him as a Leader among Leaders who has a nice smile and has three eyes denoting the Sun, Moon, and Agni.

Also, He is blue necked and is a personification of Peace. He is the husband of Parvathi and savior of the poor and the down trodden people. I worship that Lord Shiva to get is ‘Grace’ completely.

The songs, Kori Sevimpa ra re in Karaharapriya, Sundareshwaruni Joochi in Sankarabharanam and Namma Vachchina nannu in Kalyani are all in praise of Shiva as Sundareshwara at Kovoor. Sundareshwarar, along with his consort Soundara Nayaki, bestows His Grace on all people to get whatever they want, be they Devas, Munis etc.

In the Kalyani song he says, oh! Sundareshwara, even though you are ready to give me everything, they are all material things and I can not see your’ Lotus Feet’ in them. Also, you are beyond any religion and you represent the NADAM. Please give me your Grace immediately.

The Sankarabaranam song fully describes Lord Shiva’s beauty with golden salangai in his feet and diamond rings and his shining face with Kasturi. Tyagaraja says, Shiva, after seeing you with so much beauty, who would like to see those Apsaras like Ramba, Urvashi etc in the Devalokam. You are the chief of Mt. Kailas and your beauty is unparalleled. He is begging Shiva to grant him ‘His Grace’ soon.

Ilalo Pranathathi Haruda in Ataana ragam and Ehi Trijagadheesha in Saaranga ragam are songs in praise of Shiva at Tiruvaiyyaru. Tyagaraja, in the Aatana song is lamenting/accusing Shiva as not being worthy to be addressed as ‘remover of sorrows and/or bestower of all good to people etc. as he has not given the darshan to him even after receiving his ‘ashtanga namaskaram’ with full devotion. In the Saaranga song, he is praising Shiva, clad in elephant skin, as the God of all the three worlds, a warrior, devoted to his followers like a bee to the flowers and who has Nandi as his vahanam. He concludes by saying, Shiva, you are the remover of all sins and please give my your Grace immediately.

Testimonials

I recieved my Mahavir pendant today. It is wonderful. I was recently in Delhi and as it was a spiritual trip visiting Jain temples in Rajasthan, Agra, Rishikesh and Delhi i did not have the opportunity to shop much. The pendant is beautiful and i shall treasure it. I have attached a picture of me in India. Your country and the people will always be in my heart.
