About the Artiste

Ustad Ghulam Hassan Shagan Khan is probably the most outstanding living exponent of Khayal singing in Gwalior Gharana of Pakistan.

He was born in 1928 in Amritsar but later moved to Lahore. His grandfather was a legendary musician as was his father Ustad Bhai Lal Mohammad. His father wanted him to study but after the sudden death of his elder brother at the age of 22 Ustad Shagan had a big responsibility on his shoulders to carry forward the legacy.

Ustad Shagan’s first and so far the most memorable performance was in Calcutta in 1962 at a music conference where he performed in front of Pandit Omkarnath Thakur, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Allah Rakha, Shankar Prasad and Aminuddin Dagar Kahn Sahib. He sang Darbari raga there and enthralled the audience with his outstanding performances. He has won many awards and gold medals from the Pakistani government including the pride of performance and the Graduates award by the organizers of the cultural association of Pakistan. He has traveled to many countries including Spain, France, Sweden, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland and the UK and has been received with overwhelming response.

Ustad Shagan has dedicated himself to music and trained his sons in classical music in an attempt to keep it alive with the coming generations.

This album is a celebration of the legendary Ustad Ghulam Hassan Shagan Khan who has been an outstanding phenomenon in the history of classical music and one of the greatest exponents of the Gwalior gharana style of singing form Pakistan.
