Dressed much like her beloved husband Shiva, complete with his headgear and tiger-sking wrapped around her waist, the goddess nevertheless stands upon the recumbent form of her calm and unpertrubed spouse, lying on a funeral pyre; the howling jackals spouting fire, human bones and skulls lying hither thither, and ominous dark birds in the background adding to the ominous setting of a cremation ground.

The goddess wears a long garland of human skulls, and a serpent forms her sacred thread. Red vipers make up the anklets clinging to her feet like two devotees. She holds a sword with a long and sharp blade, a lotus with a snake around its stem and also a skull-bowl. The main right hand brandishes a pair of scissors, identifying this terrific goddess as Tara, one of the Ten Mahavidyas.

Worshipped mainly for wealth and poetic skill, goddess Tara is also known as Nila-Saraswati (Blue Saraswati, becaue of her color), and Ugra Tara (Fierce Tara, because of her aggressive and fearful demeanor). She has the added ability to rescue her devotees fro horrible calamities
