Amid the multitudinous goddesses we see around us, the most ubiquitous and the most arresting is Durga. The Skanda Purana tells that the different parts of her body came from the different deities. Thus, parts of all the gods had combined to create a deity more powerful than all of them put together.

This Kalamkari depicts the image of Durga on a triple layered pedestal. The eight-armed battle queen holds in her hands, the weapons provided by the gods - a shield and a sword in the main hands. She wears a local attire, beautiful jewellery and a towering crown; a large halo is there around the glorious goddess. Despite being proclaimed a battle queen, she has a tranquil expression on her face; the large eyes look kindly at her devotees.

Behind Durga, sharing the same platform is her vehicle, the lion. Animal representations were used to portray certain characteristics of a divinity. The powerful lion as a vehicle, therefore, befits the status of the great goddess.

The black background helps to project the clarity of the image of the goddess and her mount.
