This thangka shows Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha, in a gentle and soothing complexion. He is seated in the vajraparyankasana (cross-legged) on a moon disk placed on lotus flower, which emerges out from the lake. His right hand is in the gesture of charity (varada) and holds the stem of the myrobalan plant with fruits and leaves. The left hand in his lap is in the meditation position, and holds a decorated iron bowl filled with medicinal fruits and herbs. His hair is designed in curls with a prominent ushnisha and there are three jewels on the top of his head. His eyes are half-closed and there is the wisdom circle (urna) between the eyebrows. His earlobes are elongated and his neck has three folds. He is wearing a beautiful monastic garment made up of fine silk. The upper garment covers the left shoulder only, while the lower drape covers the body upto the feet. Both are in different complexion and decorated with flowers and stylized designs.
The Medicine Buddha is also known as the Healing Buddha. He is said to dispense spiritual medicine when properly worshipped. It is a popular belief in many countries that an efficacious cure may be accomplished by merely touching the image of Medicine Buddha.
