Radha and Krishna, the divine duo have innumerable stories about their romance and the rendezvous they had in the deep forests of Vrindavan to enjoy the bliss of each other’s company. During almost all these meetings, they were accompanied by one or a few gopis, who helped them reach the destined spot, safe from the disapproving eyes of the rest of the village folk. In the lap of Mother Nature, the love of Radha and Krishna blossomed.

This Basohli miniature brings to you a chapter from the romance of the heavenly couple. Radha and Krishna decked in the most charming attire, sit in the middle of a dense forest, hinted by the dark green hues of the painting. Krishna looks graceful in his Pitambara (yellow garment), jewelled crown decorated with peacock feathers, and Vanmala- garland made out of wildflowers. Sri Radha is equally enchanting in her fine garments of blue and red and ornaments of gold and pearls. She lovingly sits on Krishna’s lap, who is playfully holding her wrist. Their eyes are fixed on the third image in the painting- Lalita. She is the gopi in charge of arranging and decorating the meeting spot of Radha and Krishna, a task that she successfully completes, but due to her ecstatic love for both of them, cannot seem to leave them alone. Due to this fact, she is often depicted in Radha-Krishna paintings standing nearby, seeming to be disturbing the lovemaking of the couple. The episode is taking place on the banks of river Kalindi or Yamuna, painted in dark colours near Lalita’s feet.
