Oman Khayyam, born in Iran in the late 11th century is the main protagonist of this painting. He was an astronomer and mathematician at the royal court but he is best known for his poetry. Wine and women formed an integral part of the poet's life. Seen here with Omar Khayyam is a beautiful woman strumming the strings of the instrument, providing him inspiration. He has a cup of wine in one hand as he holds the manuscript in he other, reading out the stanzas to her. A jar of ink with a feather stylus dipped in it sits next to the wine casket.
If the inebriating effect of wine, woman and poetry wasn't enough, there is the moonlit night, with moonbeams falling on the stream. The colour palette of the background, the delicate flowers, the softly undulating hills, all give the painting an ethereal look.
