Religious art has one subject which appeals to all: the story of Rama and Sita, a pattern for human couples. Seventh avatar of Vishnu, Rama descended to the earth in order to slay Ravana, leader of the demons.

Numerous episodes from the Ramayana are visually narrated by artists in various media. The scene depicted on this kalamkari work is that of Rama's coronation. The center of the composition has Rama and Sita seated under a decorative canopy. The artist has brought together all the characters that influenced Rama's life in a positive manner. Rama's brothers, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughana are in close proximity to the couple. On either end of the row are Vishwamitra and Hanuman, two of the characters, one who affected Rama's life prior to the exile and the other who was by his side during the exile. The lower row consists of humans and demi gods who were somehow instrumental in Rama's victory over Ravana.

The rendering of the panel is somewhat dull and seems like a studio portrait but what is noteworthy is the presentation of an important episode. The upper row has all characters facing the viewer, whereas the lower row shows all in either left or right profile; both balanced judiciously.
