Description
Ganesha, lord of the ganas, is the most universally adored of all the Hindu gods and his image is found in practically every part of India. In South India, where Kalamkari is predominant. Ganesha's brother Kartikeya, known in the South as Skanda is more popular, but images of Ganesha are not rare.

In this Kalamkari, we see Ganesha in a tribhanga position, dancing on a pedestal. A curvaceous niche forms a frame around the image. Ganesha's elephant head is a supreme attribute; it represents the syllable OM, which eternally vibrates in the whole universe. Here, it is turned sideways with the trunk raised. The placement of his left leg is akin to Shiva's posture as Nataraja as is the mudra of the hands. The upper hands hold the ankush in the right and the pasa in the upper left hand. The ankush or the elephant goad represents the compass the lord uses to guide us. The pasa or the noose was given to him by Varuna, the god of waters. It serves to bind and stop the actions of the evil. Ganesha is adorned with a karanda - mukuta, numerous necklaces, armlets, bracelets and anklets.

This Kalamkari work has a sensitive form, rhythm and an inherent balance, just like the image of Nataraja, which is most attractive.
