Iranian and Persian paintings abound in themes where the horse forms an important part. This magnificent animal also caught the fancy of Mughal painters.

This equestrian portrait clearly depicts the dignity and importance of a fine steed. It is in rigid profile, single in composition, dominating the whole picture plane. The steed obviously belongs to the royal stables. The ornaments adorning it say it all - various belt of different patterns decorate the neck and a continuous gold ornament starts at the head following the entire mane.

The purity of the breed is depicted in the strong and firm mouth showing a line of sturdy teeth; the eye is small and expressive; the ears erect with attention. The portrait of the steed shows technical finesse and refined workmanship in a restrained manner that make the picture valuable.
