This theatrical composition is based on the legend of Sohni and Mahiwal. This picture is significant not only for the sensuality and emotion it portrays but for the transformation it has brought about in the traditional manner and style of presenting Indian lore. The artist has shown in this painting the mastery of landscape, the romantic glamour and drama of nature.

The background consists of an overcast turbulent sky, trees swaying in the strong winds and an occasional streak of lightning. Contrary to that is the calm expression of Sohni's face as well as that of the undisturbed river. Here, different contradictory elements co-exist on one pictorial plane. The upturned face is the proud owner of dreamy eyes and lips holding a mysterious smile. She wears a short green bustier and a long skirt. The transparent odhini sensuously reveals more than it conceals. She is dramatically poised with one arm resting against the urn and the other against the end of her long, slim waist. Silent love of her heart expresses itself in the gleam of her eyes and the glow of her cheeks; tender, dignified and utterly lovely, that makes her so fascinating.

The central figure stands conspicuous due to its brilliant yet subdued colors, the tones of which are rich, deep and alive.

Shading at right places highlight the body contours and establish a three-dimensional effect. Drawing and modeling of the figure is excellent, embodying an extraordinary rich sensuous appeal.
