The wild nature of the tribe is gradually subsiding and they are taking to civil occupation and interests. But sub-consciously, their wild and violent bent of mind comes across in the theme of paintings also. The pair of fish has some kind of softness due to the steady line and warm colours. The alligator on the other hand looks ferocious and mighty substantiated by the green colour of envy. The patterns are linear in form, in a strict tribal idiom. The pink, orange and deep red colours show that they are aware of extracting various tints and shades by mixture of colours.
Thematically, it is a curious painting. Considering, that gonds belong to the dark intoners of the forests, they are well aware of the inhabitants of the water world. The alligator's pristine white teeth in the stark red mouth adds to the vile character of the reptile. There is deftness in the brush work, so much that the artist does not need to give an outline to the subject that also flows out of the brown frame.
