The stupa, also known as chaitya, is the most important and distinctive cult object in Buddhism. It is a conical relic structure that was raised over the mortal remains of the Buddha. The stupa was initially intended as an aniconic depiction of the immortal Buddha, however gradually figurative images also became the focus of Buddhist aesthetics. This painting combines both these aspects, where the icon of the standing Buddha is seen inside the most famous stupa in the world, the Svayambhunath of Kathmandu. A large collection of Buddhist monks can be seen offering their prayers to the Exalted One. At the top and bottom panels can be seen various important episodes from the life of
Shakyamuni Buddha.
The continuing veneration of the stupa all over the Buddhist world is one of the links connecting all sects and orders of Buddhism.
