The Source for the Divine Spark in Each of Us

An enduring enigma concerning the image of Ardhanrishvara is the question of what happened to the remaining male and female halves after the first halves had joined together to form this divine image. The answer is revealed in the following conversation between Lord Ganesha and Karttikeya, the two sons of Shiva and Parvati:

Karttikeya: Dear Brother, when father and mother became a single body, what happened to the other halves of each?

Ganesha: The male half was born as everyman on earth, and the female one as everywoman on earth.

This powerful story explains that there is a divine spark in each of us, derived from our cosmic parents Shiva and Parvati. In this sculptural depiction of the primordial father-mother, the right half with a crescent in the crown is typically male, while the left, wearing a long dhoti is female. The male side has two arms, while the female has only one. Lord Shiva wears a short lower garment made of tiger skin, and the two deities wear different ornaments in their ears. Shiva's upper right arm carries an animal goad, justifying his title of 'Pashupatinath', or the Lord of Animals.

This sculpture was created using the ancient wax-casting method, where one mould is used to cast only a single statue.
