Being the embodiment of tamas, Kali is black. She is naked, clad in space (digambara). Human hands form her girdle and in her neck she wears a garland of skulls, implying that life and death are inseparable there is no life without death, no death without life. Her long tresses fall behind her. Kali has four hands: a left hand holds a severed head indicative of the destruction of evil power and the hand below holds a bowl of blood. In the two right hands she holds a chopper and the trident of her Lord. In this fearful aspect, she gyrates violently on a prostrate Shiva. Her dance is believed to be so furious that the earth is said to tremble under her feet.
