Incense is commonly used in different Buddhist rituals, worships, prayers and festivals. The followers and devotees generally burn the incense before an icon and within a shrine and temples etc. The purpose of burning incense is generally purification or to welcome someone. The portable incense vessels or censers are carried in an introductory procession in front of a high lama, or in an introductory procession of a lama's ritual dance, or prior to a ritual.

The censers are made in different pieces, sizes, shapes, designs and materials. The present one is made in two pieces. 1. a rounded body and 2. a cover. The middle portion of the cover has an openwork design in lotus flower and leaves etc. The top of the cover has a medallion shaped lotus flower. The jewel shaped knot has been fixed on the centre of the flower. The projected rim of the cover has arched shaped and zigzag designs around the projection. The neck of the burner has also zigzag designs followed by openwork designs in flowers. Thereafter again zigzag designs have been incised in the shape of a band. The rounded body of the object is decorated with stylized dragons, eagles and floral designs. The base of the object consists of elongated lotus petals with a sloping designs running along the bottom edge. Three chains have been attached to the burner from the three different sides of the object and at the top they are attached to a hook in order to hang or hold the censer or burner.
