A collection of critical essays on the prolific writer from Kashmir, Abhinavagupta (A.D. 993-1015) both in print and in ms; annotated edn. for the first time of the Paryantapancasika, a minor work on Kashmir Saivism by Abhinavagupta, and of the Gurunathaparamarsa (a hymn of praise on Abhinavagupta); the other critical essay in this collection include the corrections in the text of, and authorities cited in the Abhinavabharati, the correspondence between Pratyabhijna and Advaita.

About the Author:

Dr. V. Raghavan, M.A., Ph.D., Retired as Professor of Sanskrit and Head of the Department, University of Madras, in 1968; Fellow of the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, 1969-70; Chairman, Academic Sub-Committee, First World Sanskrit Conference, Ministry of Education, 1971-72.

Received the Kane Gold Medal for Sanskrit Indological Research from Asiatic Society, Bombay, 1953; Received the Sahitya Akademi Prize for best book on Sanskrit Research (Bhoja's Srngara Prakasa) 1966; elected Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi, 1964, and Fellow of Sahitya Akademi 1979; President, All India Oriental Conference, 1962.

Awarded Padma Bhushan by the President of India, 1962.

Member of the Sanskrit Commission of the Government of India, 1956 and of the Central Sanskrit Board since inception; Honorary Member, Ecole Francaise d' Extreme-Orient and the Academy of Sciences, Vienna; awarded Gold Medal and Diploma by the Noble Order of St. Martin, Vienna, 1967; elected President, International Association of Sanskrit Studies, 1973.

Awarded the titles of Kavikokila and Sarva-kala-kalapa for his original creative writings in Sanskrit and versatile contribution to different arts by His Holiness Sri Sankaracharya of Kanchi; also the title Vidvatkavindra; awarded the Kalidas Puraskar of the original Sanskrit Play ANARKALI by the U.P. Government, 1974.

Has toured widely in East and West for study, lectures and Conference.

Author of over 100 works and 900 papers. For details of publications see the Bibliography of his writings upto 1969 (Ahmedabad, P.969) and Sanskrit and Indological studies (Dr. V. Raghavan Felicitation volume). His magnum opus, 'Bhoja's Srngaraprakasa', (English exposition) has been printed thrice (1939, 1963, 1978). The full text of the Srngaraprakasa with annotations is being completed now.

Among his posthumous publication (Finalised by his student and associated Dr. S.S. Janaki) are - 'Festivals, Sports and Pastimes of India' (Ahmedabad, 1979), 'Sri Meenakshi Suprabhatam' (Sanskrit) (Madras 1979), 'Sri Muthuswami - Dikshitacarita Mahakavya' (Sanskrit) (Madras 1980); 'on Kalidasa' (Mysore 1980), and 'Ramayana Tradition in Asia' (Sahitya Akademi, 1980).
