About the Book Kalki serialised the novel Alai Osai in 1948-49. Conceived as his 'Gandhian novel' and majestic in its panoramic sweep in time and space, its action ranges across India over a 15-year period ending with the assassination of the Mahatma. Suffused with the idealism and hope of the early years independence, it offers an opportunity for the present generation to rediscover and savour them again.

Kalki called Alai Osai "the very best of service done to Mother Tamil for thirty years in all humility and piety" by him confirming its status as a must read modern classic of Indian literature.

About the Author Kalki (1899-1954) was the pen name of R. Krishnamurthy, perhaps the greatest Tamil writer of the first half of the 20th century. He was the author of many novels and a vast corpus of essays in addition to editing his magazine 'Kalki. He translated Gandhiji's autobiography into Tamil and was an important freedom fighter and a vigorous promoter of classical music composed in Tamil.
