Casting the Evil Eye: Witch Trials in Tribal India
Casting the Evil Eye: Witch Trials in Tribal India
Description

From the Jacket :

Deep in eastern India beats a heart of darkness. It is a secret heart, entangled in the shadows of superstitions and medieval beliefs, a heart nearly beyond help and struggling for light. Casting the Evil Eye takes a hard look into this remote, tribal belt of India and steps into a murky world: of witch doctors and witch hunters, of spells and counter-spells, of poverty and rank material greed, of death and devilry, of oppression and ostracism - ultimately, of humanity against itself.

Casting the Evil Eye courageously documents the societal evil of witch-hunts and witch-trails and speaks passionately about this man-made evil that stalks the destitute and the deprived. It is a social document in the form of a book, a telling commentary on the fractures that split and hurt Indian society, a case history of those victimized brutally on the margins and left behind in the march toward modernization.

About the Author :

Archana Mishra was born in Patna in 1962. She did her PhD from Patna University and taught chemistry for a while. Despite an opportunity to work as a research scientist in the National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur, she opted for a career in journalism. Her articles have appeared in The Times of India, The Asian Age, The Telegraph and The Avenue Mail on subjects related to education, history, health, gender discrimination and other social issues. Casting the Evil Eye is her first work of non-fiction. Presently, she is working on her second book.

Testimonials
I received the Green Tara Thangka described below right on schedule. Thank you a million times for that. My teacher loved it and was extremely moved by it. Although I have seen a lot of Green Tara thangkas, and have looked at other Green Tara Thangkas you offer and found them all to be wonderful, the one I purchased is by far the most beautiful I have ever seen -- or at least it is the one that most speaks to me.
John, USA
Your website store is a really great place to find the most wonderful books and artifacts from beautiful India. I have been traveling to India over the last 4 years and spend 3 months there each time staying with two Bengali families that I have adopted and they have taken me in with love and generosity. I love India. Thanks for doing the business that you do. I am an artist and, well, I got through I think the first 6 pages of the book store on your site and ordered almost 500 dollars in books... I'm in trouble so I don't go there too often.. haha.. Hari Om and Hare Krishna and Jai.. Thanks a lot for doing what you do.. Great !
