Preface

Most people who have a little or no knowledge of astrology don't believe in its validity and truthfulness. They disown it on the pretext that astrology is a hoax and has nothing to do with human behaviour, conduct, luck or future.

Like some of these people, I too dismissed any thoughts that could carry me into the vicinity of astrology when I was 20 years old. Such thoughts pervaded me until I turned 25 when, after graduating in English literature from Agra University, I applied for a senior position in the Police Department. As I was physically very fit and comparatively alert mentally, I was confident of being selected. When I had been selected and was about to proceed for six months' training prior to final absorption in the department, my widowed mother persuaded me to consult a renowned astrologer. She believed the astrologer could tell me whether the line of action I intended to pursue was correct or not. Initially, I declined to follow her advice, but as she was apprehensive about my joining the police force and pestered me to consult the astrologer, I agreed to see him.

Before I met the astrologer, it so happened that I had received a letter of appointment as a teacher from the State Department of Education. In fact, that letter helped my mother put more pressure on me to change my mind and take up a teaching job. As her insistence on my meeting the astrologer gradually increased, I yielded to her pressure.

The revered old man sitting on a mat spread on the floor welcomed both of us and inquired what had brought us there. After a preliminary talk on how things were, my mother asked him a direct question: 'Out of the two jobs, which one should my son join to be successful in life?' She then gave him my horoscope. Opening the pages of the horoscope the old man made some calculations. A while later, he told my mother, 'Your son will have better luck in teaching.' After a pause, he said that though the stars were quite favourable even if I joined the police force, it would be better if I chose teaching. This helped my mother persuade me to stay with teaching. She advised me to stick to what the astrologer had predicted.

Later, we left the old man's house. On the way home, I told my mother that I did not agree with the astrologer's predictions and would surely join the police force, as this was my dream for a couple of years.

A couple of days later, it was time for my departure to the city where I had to join duty prior to proceeding to the police training school. Contrary to my mother's desire, I left home and reached my destination.

Two days later, after the preliminary rituals were completed, my mind suddenly started thinking about the astrologer's predictions. Thirteen men, including myself, had been selected and given railway tickets to proceed to Bihar to join the training school. Along with the others, I had reached the railway station on time but with a double mind. There was still time to join the teaching job. The more I tried to dispel the astrologer's prediction, the more disturbed I felt.

As the time approached to board the train that had already steamed into the platform, I hurriedly wrote a short note to the concerned officer telling him I was unable to proceed to the training school. Handing over the letter to one of my colleagues, I boarded another train to report for the teaching job.

In a doleful mood but under the influence of an unusually strong inner voice, I joined the teaching profession. In fact, I had hardly dreamt of becoming a teacher. But as luck would have it, I started my life's journey as a teacher without any interest in the job. Sometimes, I cursed the astrologer for his prediction. Perhaps his prediction had exerted a psychological effect on me and impelled me to become a teacher.

'Was I really destined to lead life this way?' This was the question that often pervaded my moods making me restless for hours. It was really painful to think about it. Though my mother was extremely happy about my decision, I was burning with agony and dismay. I developed a great dislike towards astrology for obvious reasons.
