Preface

The present book provides comprehensive and authentic in-formation on the contribution of Indian musicologists on Indian music. This work is a part of my long research work for the D.Lit degree. When I commenced forming ideas and collecting data on the pioneering work of the Indian musicologists, I realized that the existing material on the subject was very scattered and I had no alternative but to compile it from various sources throughout India. Before I started collecting data, I glanced through some of the reference sources — both books and journals in which work of some Indian musicologists was discussed. I found some journals informative such as, the journal of Indian musicological society (IMS), Baroda, Shruti (Chennai), Sangeet Natak (Delhi), journal of ITC — SRA. In the second phase of my data collection, I was fortunate to get an opportunity of personally meeting several top musicians and musicologists of this decade. With the help of recorded interviews, I was able to collect authentic informtion and their views which were projected in their work. Ilea of the musicologists whom I meet and interviewed, esixessed their utmost interest and support in this subject. To include a greater number of musicologists with their authored work and for the benefit of thorough analysis, musicaLeflts have been divided into two categories namely pnt4ent and moderately prominent according to the authenticity and variety of their work. It is hoped that present publication would render help in exploring the contribution of eminent musicologists on Indian music and also serve as a useful and authentic reference manual not only for teachers, students and scholars of music but also for all general readers who are interested in Indian Classical music.
