Preface

Kalpatharu Research Academy, Bangalore, has launched a major project, Bharatiya-Samskriti-Sarvasva-Kosha, under which many volumes have already been published. The project includes all aspects of Indian Culture, including the classical medical systems like Ayurveda. The Academy has by now brought out some books on the Ancient Medical Wisdom of India. It is now bringing out a slender book on an important medicinal herb, Guggulu, in continuation of a series (under which two monographs were published earlier).

The Academy is grateful to Vaidya Dr. S.R. Sudarshan, an Ayurvedic practitioner of Bangalore for having kindly responded to our request to prepare this monograph for the Academy. The Academy is also deeply indebted to the chief patron Jagadguru of Sringeri Sharada Peetham, Sri Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Swamiji, and to the Chairman Sri V.R. Gowrishankar, who is also the Administrator of Sringeri Sharada Peetham. This monograph is humbly dedicated to Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji to mark his 51st vardhanti mahotsava.

We also thank the Authorities of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi and the Authorities of Ministry of Education, Govt. of Karnataka and we also thank the printers M/s. Omkar Offset Printers for their expeditious neat work.

Introduction

Guggulu is one of the most important drugs used in Ayurveda. It has also been investigated by modern pharmacologists and the studies have confirmed the medicinal properties attributed to it in Ayurveda. The formulations which contain Guggulu are also dispensed by Ayurvedic physicians all over India and abroad.

In this book, I have dealt with Guggulu and its formulations.

I am grateful to Shri Yellappa Reddy, former Secretary, Govt. of Karnataka and Dr. Keshavamurthy of Regional Research Centre (Ayurveda) Jayanagar, Bangalore for furnishing me with line drawings and photographs of Guggulu. The cover photograph has been taken from the book The Pharmacological and Clinical Studies of Guggulu in hyper lipidaemia/lipid metabolism, published by the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare), Govt. of India, New Delhi, 1992.

I am grateful to Sri Daivajna K.N.Somayaji, Chief Editor and Director, Kalpatharu Research Academy, and to the Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Bharathi Tritha Swamiji of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, the chief patron, and Sri V.R.Gowrishankar the chairman of the Academy, for publishing this book. I thank Sri P.S. Venkatesh Babu and Sri B. Nagendra of Omkar Offset Printers for printing this book in an excellent manner.

Christine, the Netherlands
Thank you very much for the Shri Yantra with Navaratna which has arrived here safely. I noticed that you seem to have had some difficulty in posting it so thank you...Posting anything these days is difficult because the ordinary postal services are either closed or functioning weakly.   I wish the best to Exotic India which is an excellent company...

Namaskar. I am writing to thank Exotic India Arts for shipping the books I had ordered in the past few months. As I had mentioned earlier, I was eagerly awaiting the 'Braj Sahityik Kosh' (3 volumes). I am happy to say that all the three volumes of it eventually arrived a couple of days ago in good condition. The delay is understandable in view of the COVID19 conditions and I want to thank you for procuring the books despite challenges. My best wishes for wellness for everyone in India,
Prof Madhulika, USA
