Book Description

Preface

Guruvamsakatha contains the biography of four saints viz. Satyavijaya, Satyasandha, Satyadharma and Satyaprajna. Satyavijaya was the preceptor of the jagirdars of Arani in Vellore district of Tamilnadu. They were his great devotees. They presented to Uttaradimatha good many silver articles and jewellery to Sri Mularama, the presiding deity of Uttaradimatha. The Brndavana of Satyavijaya is in a portion of the palace of Arani Jagirdars. The town in which this Vrndavana is constructed is known by the name Satyavijayanagara. In his Purvasrama Satyavijaya belonged to Pandurangi family and was known as Balacarya Pandurangi. This Pandurangi family belongs to the town Mannari. In purvasrama he was the great grandson of Srinivasacharya Pandurgi the son of the famous Keshavacharya (Gururaja) the younger brother of Sri Vidyadhisa tirtha.

Sri Satyadharma tirtha was a great scholar and commentator. He has written a detailed commentary on Tattvasankhyana, on sixth skandha to twelfth skandha of Bhagavata excluding eleventh skandha. He has also written commentaries on Virataparva and Udyogaparva of Mahabharata and Ramayana. His Brndavana is in Holehonnuru of Shimoga District.

Sri Satyasandha was a direct disciple of Satyabodha. He travelled all over India. At Gaya he reestablished the right of Uttaradimatha to worship Visnupada and revived the disciples i.e. Gayavadas. Gayavadas were converted to Madhwa faith by Sri Vidyadhisa tirtha and the privilege of workshipping Visnupada was secured by him. This was revied by Sri Satyasandha.

On this occasion Balacarya Pandurangi of Masur accompanied him and assisted him in this great task. On his way back from Gaya and Kashi. Sri Balacharya Pandurangi brought the idol of Sri Vidyadhisa tirtha from Dharmapuri on bank of Godavari to Masur on the bank of Kumudvati in Dharwar district. The Brndavana of Sri Stayasandha is in Mahishi in Shimoga district near Tirthahalli.

Sri Satyaprajna in his purvasrama known as Jayacharya Pandurangi was a great administrator. He was the Diwan of Uttaradhimatha at the time of Sri Satyadhyana tirtha and developed the wealth of Uttaradimatha. His Brndavana is in Atagur in Raichur District.

The biography of these four saints is included in this volume. Sri A.B. Shyamachar has written a detailed introduction in Kannada highlighting the contributions of these four saints to Dvaita Philosophy. I recard my appreciation for his very informative introduction.
