Swami Nisreyasananda, was an eminent monk of the Ramakrishna Order, well-known for his depth of scholarly thinking.

Born in 1899, at Trichur in the State of Kerala, he joined the Ramakrishna Order at its branch at Trichur. He was a disciple of Swami Shivanandaji, known as Mahapurush Maharaj , a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and the second President of the Order from 1922 to 1934. The Swami was ordained a monk by his Guru in 1932.

The Swami worked in the Trichur, Ceylon and Madras centres of the Order. At Madras, he was the Asst. Editor of the monthly magazine Vedanta Kesari. In 1939, he started the Visakhapatnam centre in Andhra Pradesh. 1-Ic was the head of the Mauritius centre from 1948 to 1951 and also the Editor of Prabuddha Bharata, another monthly journal of the Order for two years, 1957 and 1958. Later he went to Africa and worked hard to spread the message of Vedanta and Ramakrishna-Vivekananda in Zimbabwe Zambia and South Africa. His ministry in these countries from 1959 till his passing away in November 1991 attracted quite a number of devotees to tile message of the Great Master and his disciple, Swami Vivekananda.

The present book is a collection of the editorial articles written by the Swami every month during 1957-58), in Prabuddha Bharata. They have been rearranged under classified headings. The footnotes have been taken to the end of the book. These quotations, mostly from the Vedantic scriptures,, reveal the depth of scholarship of the Swami. These articles deal with man’s struggles with his own mind. The author shows how an undisciplined and uncontrolled mind is the cause of numerous problems, not only for the individuals, but for the society as well. The Swami, through apt illustrations and quotations from Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, Sri Sarada Devi and the scriptures, depicts the ways and means of bringing the mind under control.
