Description
About the Book

Somesvara III was a king at Kalyana in Karnataka, who ruled from 1127 to 1139 A.D. That was a peaceful period. So, Somesvara could devote his time to the composition of Manasollasa which is an enylopaedia. Dr. M.N. Joshi has dealt with all the topics which are systematically treated by the author of Manasollasa which is literally a desire yielding jewel for the information devoutly wished for i.e. Abhilasitarthacintamani. Our ancestors were widely and rightly, known for their phenomenal pursuit of knowledge.

This book “Manasollasa and Ayurveda” is divided into Five chapters. The first chapter deals with the significance of Manasollasa and in short date, life, and works of Somesvara III. The Second chapter gives a picture of the Manasollasa as an Ancient Treatise on Ayurveda. The third chapter describes Basic concepts of Ayurveda. In this chapter, the author mentions a few notable names associated with different sciences in India during different periods. The authors have furnished a detailed information about the Environment and Ayurveda in the fourth chapter. It is also stated that the imbalance in any part of nature affects the life as a whole and therefore, tries to maintain harmony among the members of the universe was felt a necessity. The Fifth chapter provides the details of physical and Mental Health, Prevention of disease which is necessary for promotion of health.

There is at the end a Glossary of select Sanskrit words and select Bibliography for the usefulness of the book. Every topic is dealt with book. Every topic is dealt with exhaustively. This book proves that Sanskrit is a treasure of sufficient details regarding medical science.

Preface

It gives me great pleasure to place before the circle of our Sanskrit readers, my book “Manasollasa and Ayurveda”. In the present day life, which offers many temptations, we should not deviate from the path followed by our ancestors. Therefore, it is quite essential that we should gain proper knowledge from some of our ancient Treatises., That does help us to lead a peaceful and purposeful life on this earth.

I place on record my deep sense of gratitude to Dr. N.P. Unni, Ex-Vice-Chancellor, Sree Sankaracharya Sanskrit University, Kalady, Kerala for having graced this work ‘Manasollasa and Ayurveda’ with his valuable foreword and blessed me with best wishes from his heart of hearts. His valuable suggestions and guidelines have framed the soft corners of this work.

Many other scholars have encouraged and helped me in completing this work. Among them, mention has to be made of my teachers and colleagues. I express my gratitude to all these scholars for their help. I am grateful to my Ph.D. student Dr. B.S. Hebballi, Dept. of Sanskrit, BAMS College, Belgaum for his overall help in seeing this work through the press. My special thanks to Dr. V. B. Joshi, Dr. Subbray Bhat, Dr. Annapurna Hegde, Prof. S. Ramachandra, Dr. C.V. Venugopal and Prof. B.B. Hunagund for their help and encouragement.

My hearty thanks are also due to Creative Graphics, Delhi. for their pain taking, attention in bringing out this book so well.

The books arrived today and I have to congratulate you on such a WONDERFUL packing job! I have never, ever, received such beautifully and carefully packed items from India in all my years of ordering. Each and every book arrived in perfect shape--thanks to the extreme care you all took in double-boxing them and using very strong boxes. (Oh how I wished that other businesses in India would learn to do the same! You won't believe what some items have looked like when they've arrived!) Again, thank you very much. And rest assured that I will soon order more books. And I will also let everyone that I know, at every opportunity, how great your business and service has been for me.
